KB5041587 is an optional, non-security preview update released on August 27, 2024. It brought Windows 11 to build 22621.4112 on version 22H2 and build 22631.4112 on version 23H2. Its changes included Android sharing, accessibility improvements, File Explorer fixes, and—on supported 22H2 editions—a set of enterprise and education fixes. It is a dated release, not a general recommendation to install it now.

Microsoft excluded Windows 11 22H2 Home and Pro from non-security preview updates. Its release notice said those editions received security updates only until their stated end-of-service date, October 8, 2024. That was a notice about servicing in 2024, not a description of their current support status. See Microsoft’s KB5041587 release notes.
For 23H2, Microsoft says the update includes all the improvements listed for 22H2 and documents no additional issues specific to that release.
What the preview changes
Several features were delivered gradually, so their availability could vary by device rather than appearing for every user immediately.

- Widgets Board in the European Economic Area: Changes improve security and APIs for widgets and feeds. Microsoft Start Experiences powers Microsoft Start widget and feed experiences. Some existing widgets are removed or modified, which may temporarily affect their functionality.
Additional fixes for 22H2 Enterprise and Education
Microsoft lists these quality fixes specifically for Windows 11 22H2 Enterprise and Education:
- Fixed a possible Input Method Editor memory leak after closing a combo box window that had input focus.
- Updated COSA profiles for certain mobile operators.
- Addressed disconnections of external Bluetooth devices when certain Bluetooth policies were deployed.
- Fixed a system hang that could occur when the Bind Filter Driver accessed symbolic links.
- Addressed a Unified Write Filter deadlock that could prevent a System Center Configuration Manager task from re-enabling UWF and completing an expected restart.
- Fixed a laptop hang that could occur after resuming from hibernate following repeated lid-close and lid-open cycles.
- Fixed a File Explorer navigation pane issue when browsing folders in a shell namespace extension.
- Reduced repeated European Digital Markets Act notices in certificate-based Microsoft Entra single sign-on.
- Fixed an issue that could prevent a BitLocker data drive moved from a newer Windows version to an older one from decrypting.
Linux dual-boot warning and what happened afterward
Microsoft documented a Linux boot failure on some Windows/Linux dual-boot systems after the August 2024 Windows security update. The reported error was: “Verifying shim SBAT data failed: Security Policy Violation. Something has gone seriously wrong: SBAT self-check failed: Security Policy Violation.”

The cause was a Secure Boot Advanced Targeting (SBAT) setting intended to block old, vulnerable boot managers. The update was designed not to apply the setting when it detected a dual-boot system, but Microsoft said some customized dual-boot configurations were not detected on some devices.
Microsoft states that the September 2024 update KB5043076 and later updates do not contain the settings that caused the issue. It says dual-boot systems need no additional steps after installing one of those later updates. If you are troubleshooting now, check which updates are installed on the affected PC rather than treating the 2024 warning as necessarily unresolved.

How to install KB5041587
- Check Windows Update: Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and look in the “Optional updates available” area.
- Use the Catalog if needed: Microsoft also offered a standalone package through the Microsoft Update Catalog.
The package included servicing stack update KB5041586, with builds 22621.4099 and 22631.4099. Microsoft describes the servicing stack as the component that installs Windows updates; improving it is part of the release’s quality work.

Microsoft says the cumulative update is combined with the latest servicing stack update. To remove the LCU from that combined SSU/LCU package, use DISM with /Remove-Package and the LCU package name. Find package names with DISM /online /get-packages. Microsoft’s release notes warn that WUSA’s /uninstall switch does not work for the combined package, and that the SSU cannot be removed after installation.
