Amazon says it reviewed several separate outages affecting its retail website and app during a routine weekly Stores operations meeting—not an emergency meeting about a single code outage. The company says only one incident involved AI-assisted tooling, none involved AI-written code, and the incidents did not involve AWS.
What Amazon says the meeting covered
Amazon said the meeting reviewed several separate, unrelated incidents on its website and app that occurred over the course of one week. Their impact and duration varied. The company described operational incident reviews as a routine part of its weekly Stores operations meetings, where teams discuss root causes to improve reliability for customers.

That account distinguishes a regular review of incidents from a special meeting called solely in response to one outage. Amazon’s official statement does not identify every incident discussed or assign a duration to a particular one. Amazon’s March 11, 2026 statement explains its account of the meeting and the incidents.
What was reported about AI-assisted changes
Cybernews reported that Amazon’s weekly “This Week in Stores Tech” (TWiST) meeting was expected to include a deep dive into recent issues. The outlet said a briefing note characterized a trend involving high-blast-radius incidents and GenAI-assisted changes. The note, as described in that report, did not name the incidents. That characterization is reported context, not a confirmed Amazon finding that AI caused a trend of outages.

Cybernews also described a retail website and app outage involving reported checkout failures, app crashes, and missing orders before service recovered. Amazon’s correction does not identify that specific outage or confirm those reported symptoms. The details should therefore be attributed to Cybernews’s coverage, not treated as details established by Amazon.
Amazon’s account of the AI-related incident
Amazon said only one incident discussed at the meeting involved AI-assisted tooling. In the company’s account, an engineer followed inaccurate advice that the tool had inferred from an outdated internal wiki. Amazon said it addressed the issue and updated its internal guidance.

The distinction matters: Amazon said none of the incidents involved AI-written code. Its statement describes a person using an AI tool for advice, then acting on advice that was inaccurate—not a system independently generating and deploying the code.

Amazon said the incidents under discussion were limited to its retail store infrastructure and did not involve AWS. Third-party coverage may mention AWS incidents separately, but those are not part of the retail incident set described in Amazon’s correction.
