You can use classic Outlook from new Outlook without changing which app opens next time. In new Outlook, select the Outlook toggle in the top-right corner, then choose Use classic Outlook this time for a one-time launch or Switch back to classic Outlook to make classic Outlook open on subsequent launches.
Choose whether the switch is temporary or ongoing

These options are documented by Microsoft in its instructions for toggling out of new Outlook. Microsoft says the switch-back option also asks for feedback.
Switch to classic Outlook
- Open new Outlook—not the app labeled Outlook (classic).
- Select the Outlook toggle at the top-right of the window.
- Choose Use classic Outlook this time for a single classic Outlook session, or Switch back to classic Outlook if you want classic Outlook for later launches too.
If you need to return to new Outlook after switching back, open new Outlook from the Start menu or select its app icon. Microsoft documents the available switching paths in Switch to new Outlook for Windows.
Keep both apps available
New Outlook and classic Outlook are separate apps. Microsoft says you can pin both to Start or the taskbar and run them side by side, so you do not have to uninstall one to use the other. If the Outlook toggle is missing
- Check that classic Outlook is installed. The toggle may not appear when it is unavailable. Open Start and search for Outlook (classic); if it is not listed, the classic app may not be installed on the device.
- Check the app you opened. The toggle is in new Outlook. If you have already opened Outlook (classic), you are in the classic app rather than the app that presents the switching control.
- Ask your work or school administrator. An organization can disable the toggle for managed accounts.

Check feature and add-in needs before changing your routine
New Outlook does not support every classic Outlook capability. Microsoft says COM add-ins are not supported in new Outlook, while web add-ins are supported. Before relying on new Outlook for a particular workflow, check Microsoft’s feature comparison, last updated September 23, 2026. Microsoft cautions that the comparison may not list every capability, and some work or school features require a qualifying Microsoft 365 subscription. Some classic Outlook settings may be imported the first time you use new Outlook if the cloud settings option is selected in classic Outlook. That does not guarantee that every setting or add-in transfers; importing classic COM add-ins is subject to administrator controls.

Microsoft says new Outlook is preinstalled on new devices and on devices running Windows 11 version 23H2 or later. It can also be installed through Microsoft Store.
