There is no single documented switch that turns off every AI feature in Windows and across the web. To limit Microsoft’s AI features, adjust separate controls for Edge’s browsing context and writing help, Copilot Mode, personal Copilot settings, and the Windows Copilot app. The steps below are Microsoft-specific; they do not disable AI in every Windows component, search engine, or browser.
1. Stop Edge Copilot from using your browsing context
- In Microsoft Edge, open More (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Copilot and AI.
- Turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.
Microsoft says this prevents Copilot from using the current webpage, its title, open tabs, or browser history in responses. It limits the information Copilot can use; it does not turn Copilot off. Microsoft’s Edge Copilot support page describes the setting.
2. Turn off Edge’s AI writing assistance
- In Edge, open Settings and more → Settings → Languages → Writing assistance.
- Turn off Draft with Microsoft 365 Copilot as you write on the web.
Edge Compose may also appear in the Copilot pane and offer rewrite actions on webpages. This writing-assistance setting is separate from the browsing-context permission. Microsoft’s Edge privacy documentation explains the control.
3. Check whether Edge Copilot Mode is enabled
Copilot Mode is a separate Edge experience, described by Microsoft as opt-in in its July 28, 2025 announcement. The announcement describes features such as multi-tab context and Actions, and says users can return to the classic Edge experience through browser settings.

Because Microsoft described the experience as evolving, check the current Edge settings for the Copilot Mode control rather than relying on an older menu path. Turning off Copilot Mode is distinct from disabling the context permission or writing assistance.
4. Review personal Copilot’s web search and personalization settings
For the Copilot app with a personal Microsoft account, open Settings → Personalization and review the controls for web search, saved memories, shared experiences, and ad personalization. Microsoft says the updated app version covered by its documentation has been available since August 18, 2026. The instructions apply to personal Microsoft accounts, not work or school accounts. Clear saved memories separately
Turning off saved memories does not delete memories already stored. To remove them, go to Manage → Delete all memories.
5. Remove or manage the Windows Copilot app
If your goal is to remove the Copilot app, Microsoft Learn documents removing the Microsoft.Copilot app package through PowerShell. Follow the applicable instructions in Microsoft’s Windows Copilot management documentation. On a work-managed PC, an administrator may control or restrict app removal.

This action applies to the Copilot app, not every AI feature in Windows. Microsoft also says the former Windows Copilot sidebar was replaced by a different Copilot hardware-key experience as of the May 2025 optional preview release. Removing the app should not be treated as a complete Windows AI removal.
Keep Edge activity personalization separate from Copilot
Edge’s browsing-activity personalization setting is not the same as Copilot’s permission to use page context. To review it, open Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Privacy and look for Allow Microsoft to save your browsing activity including history, usage, favorites, web content, and other browsing data to personalize Microsoft Edge and Microsoft services like ads, search, shopping and news. Microsoft documents this setting in its Edge browsing activity and privacy information.

Turning off the personalized-ads dashboard control alone does not stop this browsing-activity personalization of search results, news, or other Microsoft web experiences.

These are Microsoft-specific controls. The available documentation does not establish a universal way to disable AI across Windows, other browsers, or search engines.
