There is no single best iPhone camera setup for every model or scene. For a dependable everyday starting point, turn on Grid and Level, keep the camera at 4:3, and let autofocus and exposure work automatically. Tap to focus, adjust exposure only when the preview needs it, and choose higher resolution or Night mode settings when the subject calls for them. The exact controls depend on your iPhone model, iOS version, selected lens, and capture format.
Start with a simple everyday setup
These are practical defaults, not settings Apple prescribes as universally best. Some options appear only on supported models.

Focus and exposure: intervene only when needed
Tap the subject on the camera preview to move the focus point. If the subject looks too bright or too dark, drag the exposure control up or down independently. There is no universal exposure adjustment value: judge the preview, especially when a bright background or strong lighting makes the subject difficult to expose.
For a series of frames with the same subject and lighting, touch and hold the subject until AE/AF Lock appears. This holds exposure and focus while you reframe or take successive photos. Choose resolution for the shot, not just the biggest number
Higher resolution can preserve more detail and give you more room to crop, but it is most useful when the subject is well lit and detail matters. For ordinary snapshots, the model’s normal setting is a sensible choice. On supported Main or Fusion cameras, Apple documents 12 MP and 24 MP default-resolution choices. To capture at 48 MP, supported models require Resolution Control or ProRAW & Resolution Control, depending on the model. Do not assume ProRAW is available on a non-Pro iPhone. - Everyday family and travel: Keep to a supported everyday resolution and check the preview rather than leaving a persistent exposure adjustment that may mis-suit the next scene.
- Architecture, landscapes, and artwork: If the light is good and fine detail or later cropping matters, consider 48 MP where supported.
Use Photographic Styles as a preference
A Photographic Style gives future photos a consistent rendering, and supported models let you fine-tune tone, color, and intensity. Pick the look before shooting if you want a consistent set of images. Style behavior and later editing support vary by model and format, so it is not a universal substitute for editing. Low light: keep the phone still
On supported iPhones, Night mode becomes available automatically in low light. Keep the phone steady through the exposure; if the scene and your grip allow it, select a longer available exposure. For maximum detail or repeatable framing, a tripod is optional—bracing the phone on a stable surface can also help. Preserve only the settings you want to keep
Use Preserve Settings if the camera’s resets interrupt a consistent workflow. The available list differs by model and can include Camera Mode, Photographic Style, Macro Control, Exposure Adjustment, Night Mode, ProRAW & Resolution Control, Apple ProRes, and Live Photo. The current guide also lists an aperture setting for iPhone 18 Pro models. Preserving a preference does not improve image quality by itself. Two less obvious controls
Prioritize Faster Shooting
Apple says this option modifies image processing so the camera can capture more photos when you rapidly tap the shutter; it is on by default. Leave it on when capturing a quick succession matters. Turn it off only if you prefer the processing choice it modifies over that rapid capture behavior. Apple does not quantify a universal image-quality gain from switching it off. Lens Correction
Where available, Lens Correction is on by default and adjusts images from the front camera or Ultra Wide camera for a more natural-looking result. Change it only if you prefer the uncorrected look; availability depends on model. Apple’s guide

Match the advice to your iPhone
Camera features and menus vary by model, iOS version, lens, and format. Apple’s current guide marks several controls as available only on supported models, so check your own Camera settings rather than assuming every iPhone has ProRAW, 48 MP capture, Macro controls, or the same Night mode options. A practical setup published for the standard iPhone 17 recommends 24 MP, 4:3, Grid and Level, and a restrained style, but that is a model-specific recommendation—not a universal Apple rule. For the iPhone 17 specifically, Apple lists 4K Dolby Vision recording at 24, 25, 30, or 60 fps, as well as macro video and Night mode time-lapse. These are specifications for that model, not a promise of the same video options on every iPhone. Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications
