Microsoft’s Word summary experience gained more detail options and document-insight tabs in a 2025 rollout. In 2026, Microsoft is moving the summary’s Top of Doc entry point to other Copilot surfaces—but summarization remains available in Word through Copilot. Whether you see an automatic summary depends on your license, document storage, and settings.
What changed in Word’s Copilot summary
Office Watch reported on April 25, 2025, that the expanded experience added three summary detail settings and five tabs for exploring a document. These are interface features, not evidence of a measured productivity improvement.
Choose a level of detail
- Brief for a concise overview.
- Standard for a middle level of detail.
- Detailed for a fuller summary.
Explore document information in tabs
- Summary: an overview of the document.
- Insights: key numbers and potential answers.
- Activity: recent changes and comments within selected time frames.
- Discussion: document conversations and comments.
- Coaching: suggestions intended to improve clarity and impact.
Office Watch also reported an upper supported document size of 1.5 million words, or about 3,000 pages, compared with a previously reported 300-page limit. That is a product limit reported in April 2025, not a guarantee that every account or document can use the feature at that scale.
Who could use the 2025 expansion—and what applies now
For the 2025 rollout, Office Watch described availability for Enterprise users with a Copilot license. Its report listed Word for Windows version 2408, build 17928.20114 or later; Word for Mac version 16.88, build 24081116 or later; and Word for the web. Those were rollout details at the time, not a current eligibility checklist.

Microsoft Support’s current guidance says access can depend on the Microsoft 365 subscription, Copilot license, organization settings, and platform. An automatic summary may appear at the top of a document depending on the license and settings. Microsoft says automatic summaries open only with a Microsoft Copilot work license and a document saved in OneDrive or SharePoint. Automatic generation requires at least 200 words; for a shorter document, you can still request a summary by selecting Summary.
How to summarize a document now
- Open the document in Word. If you want the automatic summary, the document needs to be saved in OneDrive or SharePoint, and your account must have the required Microsoft Copilot work license and settings.
- Use the summary entry point if it appears. Depending on your license and settings, Word may show a summary at the top of the document. For a document under 200 words, select Summary to request one rather than expecting automatic generation.
- Otherwise, open Copilot in Word. Prompt it with “Summarize this document.” You can also specify the form you need; Microsoft’s Word guidance gives examples such as asking for five bullets or for the decisions required before sharing.
- Check the result against the document. Use the summary as a starting point, then verify important details in the source text.
What the 2026 change means
An archived Microsoft 365 Message Center notice, MC1454113, published August 13, 2026, and updated October 6, 2026, says the Top of Doc experience is transitioning to other Copilot surfaces. The notice says rollout began in early September 2026 across Worldwide, GCC, GCCH, and DoD environments. It does not say that document summarization is being removed: users can open Copilot in Word and ask, “Summarize this document,” or use a proactive suggestion where supported.

- Compact design saves desktop space and allows for close, comfortable mouse position.
- Optimized key spacing and key travel for fast, fluid typing.
- Sleek, low-profile design complements any workspace.
- Expressive input key[2] for quick access to emojis, symbols, and more.
- Connect up to 3 devices and switch seamlessly between them[1].
The notice says administrators do not need to take action, though it recommends updating user training and help materials to reflect the changed entry point. Because this is an archived notice, its deployment details are attributed to that notice rather than presented as a live view of an organization’s rollout status.

Microsoft Support cautions that Copilot considers the entire document but may not provide citations to later content: “Although Copilot takes the entire document into account, it currently doesn’t always provide citations to later document content. We are improving this.” (Microsoft Support, “Create a summary of your document with Copilot in Word,” accessed October 8, 2026.) If a decision depends on a figure, qualification, or passage near the end, locate and check that passage in Word rather than relying on the summary alone.
