To run an M.2 SSD inside a computer, you need a drive that matches the computer or motherboard’s supported interface and physical length. Check the exact device manual before buying: an M.2 slot may support SATA, PCIe/NVMe, or only one of those. You may also need the model-specific mounting screw or standoff, and a boot drive needs an operating system installed.
What you need for an internal M.2 SSD
- A compatible M.2 SSD: Its interface and physical length must be supported by the computer’s M.2 slot.
- The computer or motherboard manual: Use the exact model’s official manual to check supported drive types, lengths, and any slot restrictions. ASUS notes that “Supported M.2 type varies per motherboard,” and some slots support SATA only: ASUS M.2 compatibility guidance.
- Mounting hardware: The slot may use a screw and standoff, but what is included and how it is installed depend on the model. ASUS notes in its motherboard manual that “The M.2 storage devices are purchased separately”; follow that board’s instructions for screws and any heatsink: ROG STRIX Z790-E GAMING WIFI manual.
- A screwdriver, if required: Check the manual for the screw type and installation steps. Do not assume you need to buy an aftermarket heatsink; the motherboard’s instructions determine whether and how its heatsink should be used.
- An operating system, if the SSD will be the boot drive: You must install or migrate an OS before booting from a blank drive. ASUS says drives without an operating system cannot be used as boot devices: ASUS NUC boot-drive guidance.
Check compatibility before buying
- Find the exact model of your laptop, desktop, or motherboard, then open its official manual.
- Confirm whether the M.2 slot accepts SATA, PCIe/NVMe, or both. The shape of the slot alone does not guarantee that a particular drive will work.
- Check which physical drive lengths the slot supports.
- Look for port-sharing notes or other restrictions. Some M.2 slots share resources with SATA ports; consult the manual for the affected model: ASUS M.2 compatibility guidance.
- Check whether the required screw, standoff, and any included heatsink are provided, and follow the model-specific installation instructions.
- If the drive is for booting, plan to install or migrate an operating system. A new SSD used only for extra storage does not need to be a boot drive.
Using an M.2 SSD externally
For external use, you need an M.2 enclosure in addition to the SSD. Match the enclosure’s published interface and supported physical length to your particular drive; enclosure compatibility varies by product. For example, ASUS’s Cobble guidance specifies supported M.2 interfaces and sizes for that enclosure, not for enclosures in general: ASUS Cobble SSD Enclosure specifications. Also check any physical constraints, such as whether the enclosure can accommodate a drive with a heatsink.
Why there is no universal M.2 SSD recommendation
The question does not identify your computer or motherboard, so there is no way to name a specific compatible drive, length, screw, or heatsink. “M.2” describes a form factor, not a guarantee that the drive’s interface will work in every M.2 slot. Select a drive only after checking the exact host manual; if you share the device model, that manual can narrow the options.
