Get the phone out of the liquid, unplug it, and turn it off if it is safe to do so. Wipe the outside, let it dry at room temperature, and do not charge it by cable or put it in rice. Water resistance is limited and model-specific; immersion, contaminated liquid, visible damage, or a persistent warning calls for manufacturer or authorized repair guidance.
What to do immediately
- Remove the phone from the liquid. Disconnect wired chargers, headphones, and other accessories.
- Turn it off if it is safe and responsive. Do not repeatedly press buttons or connect a cable to see whether it still works. Google tells Pixel owners to turn off a wet phone; Samsung says to switch off a non-water-resistant phone immediately. Google Pixel guidance and Samsung Galaxy guidance give device-specific instructions.
- Wipe the exterior gently with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth. A cloth removes surface moisture only; do not push it into a port.
- Let the phone dry in a safe place at room temperature. Keep it on a flat, dry surface with airflow. Do not use external heat or compressed air.
For an iPhone, Apple additionally advises tapping it gently against your hand with the connector facing down to remove excess liquid, then leaving it in a dry place with airflow. Apple permits cool airflow directed at the connector. Do not insert tissue, cotton buds, paper towels, or tools into the port. Apple’s liquid-detection guidance explains its steps.
When can you charge it?
Keep the cable and accessories disconnected until the phone and connector are completely dry. Charging through a wet connector can damage the phone. Apple’s guidance for iPhone is to allow at least five hours before connecting a cable or accessory, and the phone must still be completely dry; that is not a universal drying time for other brands or for an immersed phone.
Samsung says Galaxy phones block charging when moisture is detected in the port as a precaution against corrosion. Its estimate of approximately one to two hours for natural port evaporation concerns moisture in the charging port alone—not a safe wait time after immersion or proof that the phone’s interior is dry. Wireless charging is an option only for supported Galaxy models and only after the device is thoroughly dry. Samsung’s moisture-detection guidance describes the alert and charging precautions.

If an alert persists, follow the instructions for your exact phone model rather than repeatedly connecting a charger. For a wet Pixel USB-C port, Google says to power the device off and let it dry at room temperature. Burning, melting, or corrosion at the port warrants contacting Google support or a repair provider. Google’s Pixel instructions cover these symptoms.
What if the liquid was not fresh water?
Salt water, pool water, soap, oil, cosmetics, and other liquids can require different handling from a clean-water splash. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for your specific device and liquid; do not assume a water-resistance rating makes rinsing safe.

Water-resistant Samsung Galaxy exposed to certain liquids
Samsung’s US instructions say to rinse a water-resistant Galaxy exposed to dirty water or listed liquids—including soapy water, oil, perfume, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, cosmetics, or alcohol—in clean water for one to three minutes, then wipe and dry it. Do not connect accessories until it is fully dry. This rinse instruction applies only to a water-resistant Galaxy; do not apply it to other phones or to a Galaxy that is not water-resistant. iPhone exposed to a liquid other than water
Apple advises rinsing the affected area with tap water if a liquid other than water splashes on an iPhone, then drying it according to its liquid-detection instructions. Follow Apple’s directions for the particular model and exposure; do not infer that the phone can be submerged or rinsed in other circumstances. Apple’s instructions distinguish liquid exposure from ordinary charging-port moisture.

Non-water-resistant phone or uncertain rating
Power it off immediately if possible, remove the SIM card, memory card, and removable accessories if the manufacturer instructs you to, wipe the exterior, and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Samsung specifically recommends service for a non-water-resistant Galaxy exposed to liquid. Do not rinse it.
Don’t use rice, heat, or objects in the port
- Don’t put an iPhone in rice. Apple warns, “Don’t put your iPhone in a bag of rice,” because small particles could damage it. Apple recommends drying with airflow instead. Manufacturer guidance reviewed here does not establish that rice or another household desiccant restores internal water damage.
- Don’t use a hair dryer, radiator, oven, or other external heat source. Heat can harm the device; Samsung and Apple warn against it.
- Don’t blow compressed air into the phone or insert tissues, cotton buds, tools, or other objects into a charging port.
- Don’t cable-charge a wet phone or keep testing it by plugging in accessories.
- Don’t treat a water-resistance rating as waterproofing. Ratings apply to particular models and controlled conditions, not every liquid, age, or kind of exposure.
Why “water-resistant” does not mean safe to submerge
Resistance depends on the exact model and can weaken through normal wear. Apple’s iPhone support page covers iPhone 7 and later, but the tested depth and duration vary by model; Apple cautions against intentional submersion and exposure such as swimming, bathing, pressurized water, or steam rooms. Do not carry one iPhone model’s rating over to another model—or to an Android phone. Check the current support page for your device before relying on a rating. Google says Pixel phones, including Pixel Fold, are designed to be water-resistant, but normal wear can reduce that resistance. Samsung cautions that internal damage or corrosion may occur even when a Galaxy appears to work normally after exposure. A phone that powers on is not proof that it escaped damage. Google’s water-resistance and warranty information and Samsung’s liquid-exposure guidance explain their respective limits.

Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider after immersion, exposure to dirty or corrosive liquid, visible port damage, repeated liquid alerts, or persistent malfunction. Google states that water damage from accidents or other external causes is not covered by its warranty; coverage and repair options depend on the device, region, and applicable warranty or service plan. Samsung recommends inspection after exposure. Neither a warranty claim nor a repair outcome is guaranteed.
