If copy and paste stops working in Word, first check whether the problem affects Word desktop, Word for the web, or Word for Mac—and whether it happens in one document, across Word, or in other apps too. That quick comparison helps you choose the right fix instead of treating every failure as a clipboard problem. Follow these seven checks in order; Windows-only steps are marked and do not automatically apply to Mac.

1. Find out where copy and paste fails

Try copying a short piece of text from Word and pasting it into another application, such as a text editor. Then copy text from that application into Word. In Word, repeat the test in a new blank document and, if possible, with text from a different source.

  • Only one document is affected: Continue testing in a new document. That narrows the problem to the affected document or its contents, but does not by itself identify the cause.
  • Word is affected, but other apps work: Focus on Word-specific checks below.
  • Copy and paste fail in several apps: The issue may be broader than Word. Test the relevant operating-system clipboard behavior before changing Word settings.

This is a practical way to narrow the troubleshooting path, not a guaranteed diagnosis.

2. Compare keyboard shortcuts with menu commands

Try selecting text and using Word’s ribbon or context-menu Copy and Paste commands. If those work but the keyboard shortcuts do not, investigate the keyboard or shortcut assignment rather than assuming Word’s clipboard has failed.

If the menu commands work, check whether another app or system utility is intercepting the shortcut, and verify that the expected keys register when pressed. Avoid changing multiple settings at once; test again after each change.

3. Check Word’s built-in Office Clipboard

In Word, open the Home tab and open the Clipboard task pane. The Office Clipboard collects copied text and graphics so you can select an item to paste. Microsoft says it can hold up to 24 items; copying a 25th removes the oldest item. See Microsoft’s Office Clipboard instructions.

Check whether the item you expect to paste appears in the pane, then select it there. If it does not appear, copy it again and check the pane once more. The pane is a built-in Office feature; you do not need a third-party clipboard manager for this check. Microsoft documents Mac clipboard limitations, so the pane’s behavior may differ by platform.

4. Review paste and formatting options (Windows desktop)

This step is most relevant when pasting behaves unexpectedly or formatting changes—not as a universal fix for failures to copy. In Word for Windows desktop, go to File > Options > Advanced and review the Cut, copy, and paste settings. Microsoft explains that the Show Paste Options button when content is pasted setting controls whether that button appears after a paste.

When pasting, Word may offer choices such as keeping source formatting, matching destination formatting, or pasting plain text. Try an appropriate paste option from the Paste menu or Paste Options button to see whether the issue is actually a formatting mismatch. For details, see Microsoft’s guide to controlling paste formatting. These Windows desktop settings are not a general Mac or Word for the web remedy.

5. Test Word in Safe Mode (Windows)

Safe Mode starts Word with certain add-ins and customizations disabled, which makes it useful for testing whether one is involved. It is a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent fix.

  1. Close Word.
  2. Hold Ctrl while opening Word, then confirm the prompt to start in Safe Mode. Alternatively, press Windows key + R, enter winword /safe, and press Enter.
  3. Test copying and pasting in Word.
  4. If the problem goes away in Safe Mode, restart Word normally and disable add-ins one at a time, testing after each change to identify a possible conflict.

Microsoft’s Safe Mode instructions cover Microsoft 365 and Office 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2024 on Windows. See Open Office apps in safe mode on a Windows PC. Do not assume these Windows steps apply to Word for Mac.

6. Update Office and Windows, then restart

Install available Office and Windows updates, then restart the computer and test again. Microsoft’s Word troubleshooting guidance recommends updating and restarting as part of troubleshooting, but an update is not guaranteed to fix this particular symptom. Follow Microsoft’s Word troubleshooting steps for the Windows desktop application.

Microsoft’s Word for Windows known-issues page was last updated in September 2026 and does not list copy-and-paste failure among the issues shown there. That does not rule out an unlisted, localized, or newly emerging problem. The reviewed Word for Mac known-issues page, last updated July 2026, likewise had no matching entry; an unlisted issue can still occur.

7. Repair Office or contact Microsoft Support

If the problem continues after the relevant checks, use Office’s repair option on Windows or contact Microsoft Support. Microsoft points to Office repair when recurring application problems persist after Safe Mode troubleshooting. Start with the repair guidance in Microsoft’s Safe Mode support article. Repair options and their labels can vary by Office installation and Windows version; follow Microsoft’s current instructions for the version you use.

For Word for Mac, do not follow Windows repair or registry instructions as though they were interchangeable. Use Microsoft Support’s Mac-specific help. Avoid casual registry editing: Microsoft warns that incorrect registry changes can cause serious problems and says to back up the registry before making changes.

If Word for the web says “No clipboard access”

This message points to a browser clipboard-permission issue, not a setting in desktop Word. Microsoft’s instructions for Office for the web cover changing the site-specific Clipboard permission in Chrome or Edge. Open the browser’s site permissions for Office.com, allow Clipboard access, and reload the page if needed. Follow Microsoft’s Office for the web clipboard troubleshooting steps. Browser permission steps do not apply to the desktop app.
