Start with the website’s About, Contact, footer, and legal pages, then check its domain in ICANN Lookup. These steps can help identify or contact the site’s operator, but they may not reveal who designed or developed it: the domain registrant, site operator, designer, and developer can all be different.
First, decide what “built” means
A website can have several people or organizations associated with it. The operator is the person or organization responsible for the site. The registrant is the person or entity that registered its domain. The registrar is the service provider that handles domain registration. A designer or developer may have created the site’s appearance or code.
Finding one name does not establish the others. If you want to know who runs a site or how to reach them, start with the site’s own contact information. If you want the designer or developer, look for a specific credit or ask the operator; domain records alone generally cannot confirm authorship.
Check the website itself
Look for an About page, Contact page, footer, privacy policy, terms of service, or other legal notice. These may identify the business or person responsible, provide an email address, or explain how to get in touch. Google’s guidance also recommends looking for a Contact Us link or email on the homepage: Google Search Help.

Check whether the name refers to the operator or merely a service provider. A company named in a privacy policy may be responsible for a particular data-processing role, for example; a footer credit may name an agency or developer. Read the surrounding text before treating a name as the site’s creator.
Look up the domain with ICANN Lookup
- Open ICANN Lookup.
- Enter the site’s root domain, such as example.com, rather than a full page address with a path.
- Review the available registration information, including the registrant and registrar fields if they are shown.
ICANN Lookup uses the Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) to provide current domain registration data. For generic top-level domains (gTLDs), RDAP became the definitive source of registration information in place of sunsetted WHOIS services on January 28, 2025, according to ICANN’s transition announcement. The fields available vary by domain, so check the live result rather than assuming every lookup will show the same information.

Interpret the results—and their limits
A registrant is the individual or entity that registers a domain; a registrar provides domain registration services. ICANN explains these roles in its registrar information and registrant guidance. Neither role, by itself, tells you who designed or developed the website.
Some registration records display a registrant’s name and contact details. Others use privacy or proxy services that protect those details. ICANN also says it does not verify the profile content or user details in registration records; see its registration data accuracy guidance. Treat a visible name as a clue about the domain registration, not proof of who built the site or even necessarily who currently operates it.

If you cannot identify the operator
Use the contact route on the website first. If the registration record displays a contact route, you can try that as well. Google suggests registration information and, where relevant, the hosting company as possible ways to pursue contact when a site does not provide a clear route: Google Search Help.
A registrar or hosting company is an intermediary, not evidence that it created or operates the site. If you contact one, ask about an appropriate contact route rather than assuming it can disclose private customer information or identify the developer.

Why technical clues do not prove who made a site
Source code or a technology reference may help you understand how a page is structured, but it does not reliably establish authorship. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) explains that a W3C reference in source code indicates use of a standardized format, not that W3C created the document. Its Help page states: “This does not imply that W3C had anything to do with the creation of the document itself.” W3C also says it cannot identify the owner of a page outside w3.org: W3C Help.
