If your VPN won’t connect, disconnects, or connects without letting apps reach the internet, first check whether the iPhone or iPad can get online without the VPN. Then test another network and work through the VPN app, account, and configuration. Save deleting profiles and resetting network settings for last; those steps can remove settings you may need to reconnect.
First identify where the connection is failing
A VPN problem can mean several different things: the app cannot establish a tunnel, the tunnel drops, the VPN appears connected but apps have no internet, or the VPN works on one network but not another. Those symptoms point to different causes.
- Open the VPN app and check its connection status. Compare it with the VPN status shown in Settings; menu names and status displays vary by iOS/iPadOS version and provider. An open app does not necessarily mean the VPN tunnel is active.
- Temporarily disconnect the VPN in its app and try a familiar website or app. If ordinary internet access fails too, troubleshoot Wi-Fi or cellular service first. Disconnecting leaves traffic without the VPN while the test is underway, so reconnect afterward.
- Check that Wi-Fi is on and Airplane Mode is off. If you are using cellular, confirm that cellular data service is available.

Use another network to isolate the cause
Test the same device on a trusted alternate Wi-Fi network or on cellular. If the VPN works there, the original network or its administrator is the likely place to investigate. If ordinary internet works on multiple networks but the VPN fails everywhere, focus on the app, provider account, or device configuration.

- Check whether other devices can use the current Wi-Fi. If they cannot get online either, contact the internet provider or network administrator rather than treating it as an iPhone VPN fault.
- If the VPN fails only on a school, work, hotel, or public network, ask its operator whether VPN traffic is permitted. Some networks block VPN protocols; do not try to bypass an organization’s policy.
Try the low-risk fixes first
Restart the device and, if appropriate, the router
Restart the iPhone or iPad. If the problem is limited to one Wi-Fi network, restart the router and modem as well. A restart can refresh a connection; it does not by itself show that the router needs replacement.
Check date, time, and time zone
Make sure the device’s date, time, and time zone are correct. Incorrect system time can interfere with sign-in and connection checks. Use the iPhone or iPad settings rather than desktop instructions from a general VPN troubleshooting page.
Install available updates
Update iOS or iPadOS and the VPN app when compatible updates are available. Check the provider’s operating-system requirements first: support varies by VPN. For example, Proton VPN’s iOS/iPadOS help page states support for iOS 17.0 and iPadOS 17.0 or later. Its release notes say version 7.0.0 dropped support for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, and list version 7.4.0 on April 28, 2026. Those details apply to Proton VPN, not all VPN apps.

Check the VPN app, account, and connection options
Allow the app to add a VPN configuration
When a VPN app is set up, iOS/iPadOS may ask permission to add a VPN configuration. If you denied the request, the app may not be able to connect. The wording and flow depend on the provider. Proton describes the permission requirement in its iOS setup instructions.

If the provider indicates a sign-in or session problem, sign out of the VPN app and sign back in. Confirm the account is active through the provider’s official app or support channel. Some services restrict server or feature access after a paid plan expires; Proton describes that behavior for its own service, but account rules differ among providers. Never share passwords or private configuration files with third parties.
Try a different server or location
A particular server may be unavailable for maintenance or may have been retired. Select another available location or the provider’s automatic/fastest option. One failed server is not enough to establish a broader service outage.

Switch protocol only if the app offers alternatives
Some networks interfere with particular VPN protocols. If your app exposes protocol choices, try another supported option. If the connection still fails, return to the recommended or default setting. Protocol names and availability depend on the provider.
Check for a service notice
Look at the provider’s current service notices or ask its support team whether there is an incident affecting the server or location you selected. A maintenance issue may affect one server without affecting the entire service.
Review settings and software that can interfere
Check for device management restrictions
A work- or school-managed device may have restrictions on VPN profiles or require administrator approval. If the device is supervised or enrolled in mobile device management, ask IT before changing profiles, disabling security software, or resetting network settings.

Look for old or conflicting profiles and filters
In Settings, search for terms such as “VPN,” “profile,” “firewall,” or “filter.” An old VPN profile or another network filter may conflict with the connection. Remove a profile only if it belongs to you, is no longer needed, and is not managed by an organization; the app that created it may reinstall it.
Review automatic connection rules
Check whether the VPN app or settings use Connect on Demand or another automatic connection rule. If a rule repeatedly reconnects a broken profile or changes how the VPN behaves, turn it off temporarily only if you understand the effect and your organization does not require it. Exact names and controls vary by app and iOS/iPadOS version.
Check firewall, content-filter, or security apps
Apple Support warns that third-party software interacting with network connections can block some connections, including internet access. If you control the software, temporarily disable it for a test and restore appropriate protection afterward. On a managed device, ask IT instead.

Reinstall or remove configuration only when you can set it up again
Reinstall the VPN app as a later step
Before deleting the app, make sure you can sign back in and complete setup again. Reinstallation may require you to add the VPN configuration anew. Apple recommends removing VPN or security software and testing Wi-Fi when that software may be causing a network problem; contact the software provider if it is required.
Remove a stale VPN configuration cautiously
A VPN profile can be viewed or deleted in Settings, but the route and labels depend on the version and provider. Before removing one, confirm that you know how to set the service up again. Do not delete a work- or school-managed profile without administrator approval.
Reset network settings only after simpler checks
On current iOS/iPadOS versions, the route is generally Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings; wording can vary. Apple says this removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, mobile settings, and VPN/APN settings. You will need to rejoin Wi-Fi and configure the VPN again, so consult IT first on a managed device.

- If the device cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network, contact Apple Support. If other devices also cannot get online on the same network, contact the ISP or network administrator.
- If ordinary internet works across multiple networks but the VPN does not, contact the VPN provider. Include the app and operating-system versions, the exact error, server/location, and protocol. Do not send credentials or private configuration files.
- If the device is managed by work or school, stop before removing required profiles or resetting network settings and ask the administrator.
