If you can’t watch in the ESPN app, you may need to activate your DIRECTV access rather than change TV providers. Other options include subscribing to ESPN Unlimited or choosing a live-TV service that carries ESPN.
1. Check your DIRECTV package and channel lineup
Confirm that your DIRECTV account is active and that your subscribed package includes ESPN. A channel absent from your guide is a different problem from an ESPN app that will not recognize your provider access. DIRECTV’s support page is the place to check account and channel-lineup help; the exact steps can depend on your service and equipment.
2. Activate your DIRECTV access in the ESPN app
If ESPN is included in your package but the app asks you to subscribe, activate the provider entitlement. DIRECTV explains how to activate ESPN Unlimited access in the ESPN app using your ESPN user ID: DIRECTV’s ESPN activation instructions. ESPN also lists DIRECTV among its supported TV providers on its provider login guide.
Provider access and a direct ESPN Unlimited subscription are not necessarily identical: the content available through your TV package may differ from what ESPN sells directly. Check the specific event and content included with your account before relying on app access.
3. Subscribe to ESPN Unlimited directly
If you do not have an eligible TV-provider entitlement, ESPN Unlimited is a direct subscription option. ESPN says it includes ESPN Select content plus live access to ESPN networks and services, including ESPN and ESPN2. See ESPN’s subscription options for current details. ESPN Select is a separate tier; do not assume it includes the same live network access as Unlimited.
Before subscribing, verify that the event you want is carried by the service and available where you live. Rights and location restrictions can affect what streams are offered.

4. Watch through Hulu + Live TV
Hulu lists ESPN among the live channels in its Hulu + Live TV service and says live-TV subscribers also get additional ESPN Unlimited content in the ESPN app. Check the Hulu + Live TV page for current plan terms, channels, and pricing.
Hulu’s displayed offer and regular price can change. At the time reflected by that page, eligible subscribers saw an introductory offer of $49.99 for one month, followed by $99.99 per month; the offer was listed as ending October 26, 2026. Treat those figures as a dated offer, not a guaranteed current price. Hulu also notes that channel availability varies by ZIP code and that regional restrictions and blackouts apply. Enter your ZIP code and check the terms before signing up.

5. Use YouTube TV or another supported provider
YouTube TV documents access to ESPN Unlimited content integrated into its app when ESPN is included in the subscriber’s lineup. Its ESPN Unlimited help page explains the provider-dependent access. ESPN’s provider login guide also lists YouTube TV and Fubo as supported providers.
Confirm that the service’s current plan carries the ESPN channel and the event you want. Availability can depend on your plan and location, and a provider appearing on ESPN’s activation list does not guarantee access to every event or stream.

How to choose the right option
Compare access to the specific event first, then weigh the monthly cost and whether the service includes other channels you watch. Check the current lineup for your ZIP code, supported devices, and blackout terms before changing providers. ESPN and YouTube TV describe access as dependent on provider and lineup, while Hulu explicitly notes local variation and regional restrictions.
A streaming device by itself does not provide ESPN. You still need a qualifying subscription or provider entitlement.
