In August 2024, reports based on Humane’s internal figures said the company was receiving more daily returns of its Ai Pin than it was making sales. That was a reported trend—not a verified public sales record: Humane disputed inaccuracies in the reporting, including its financial data. The distinction matters, and so does the update: Humane shut down the Ai Pin’s online service in February 2025, leaving the device without its essential connected features.
What the return reports said
Quartz relayed The Verge’s reporting on internal Humane data. The figures indicated that returns had outpaced purchases between May and August 2024. The cited coverage did not provide a public, independently audited return ledger, and Humane disputed inaccuracies in the reporting.
- About 10,000 Ai Pins and accessories had shipped over four months, according to The Verge’s reporting as relayed by Quartz.
- Humane’s first-year shipping goal was around 100,000 Ai Pins, according to the same reporting.
- The Verge’s figures put the number of sold pins not returned at roughly 8,000 in June and around 7,000 by early August 2024.
- The reporting put lifetime sales at just over $9 million and the value of returned products above $1 million. These were figures from internal data reported by The Verge and relayed by Quartz, not audited public totals.
Those numbers describe aggregate activity, not why individual buyers returned their devices. They also should not be treated as settled company accounts: Humane spokesperson Zoz Cuccias told TechSpot that the reporting contained inaccuracies, including in its financial data, but did not provide specifics.
Why the Ai Pin was a difficult product to keep using
Humane marketed the Ai Pin as a screenless wearable alternative to a smartphone, with features for calls, texts, and taking photos and videos. It could project an interface onto the wearer’s palm, but it was not a self-contained gadget: its functions depended on a connection to Humane’s service and a subscription.

At launch, the reported price was about $700, plus a $24 monthly subscription, according to TechSpot’s 2024 coverage. That recurring cost was part of the product’s proposition: buyers were paying not just for hardware, but for continued access to its connected assistant features.
Early reviews cited in the coverage complained of slow responses, errors, overheating, and poor battery life. Those are reviewers’ reported experiences, not results of independent testing for this article. TechSpot also reported that Humane told buyers in June 2024 to stop using the included charging case because of a possible fire risk; that report does not establish the scope of any recall or the remedy offered.

What happened to the Ai Pin after the returns story
Humane announced the closure of the Ai Pin service on February 18, 2025, and shut down its servers on February 28, according to Adam Gastineau’s technical account. Because the product relied on those servers, the shutdown changed the story from a troubled connected device to hardware that could no longer provide its intended assistant experience. Gastineau also reports that a factory-reset unit could not be activated without Humane’s servers; this is an account based on devices he acquired, not an official support statement.
HP’s reported February 2025 transaction was not a continuation of the consumer product. Entrepreneur reported that the approximately $116 million deal covered Humane employees, its software platform, and intellectual property—not ongoing Ai Pin production or support.

What the numbers do—and don’t—show
The available reporting supports a narrow conclusion: by August 2024, The Verge’s account of internal Humane data indicated that daily returns exceeded daily sales. It does not establish a publicly audited lifetime return rate, explain why buyers returned individual units, or prove that every reported financial figure was accurate. Humane’s dispute over inaccuracies, including financial data, is part of the story rather than a detail to omit.
That distinction does not erase the practical outcome. The Ai Pin’s core functions depended on Humane’s online service, and that service ended in February 2025. A used unit should not be represented as a working AI assistant, particularly when a reset device is reported unable to activate after the server shutdown.

Should you buy a used Ai Pin?
No—not as a usable assistant. The online service that powered the product has ended, and the reported activation limitation makes even a reset unit questionable as functioning hardware. The included charging case also drew a reported possible-fire-risk warning in 2024. The evidence does not support treating the device or its accessories as a practical purchase today.
