As of October 4, 2026, Microsoft lists Windows 11 version 26H2 as available, and 24H2 Home and Pro editions are due to stop receiving updates on October 13, 2026. Check the version Windows Update offers for your device and consult Microsoft’s current release-health notices before attempting a manual installation.
What happened when Microsoft started the Windows 11 24H2 rollout?
Microsoft announced the Windows 11 2024 Update, version 24H2, on October 1, 2024. Microsoft’s supported-version table identifies that as the release’s availability date and lists build 26100. The company described 24H2 as “a full operating system (OS) swap that contains new foundational elements required to deliver transformational AI experiences and exceptional performance.” That is Microsoft’s characterization of the update, not an independently verified performance result. Microsoft’s launch announcement and supported-version table provide the dated release details.
The rollout was phased, not a simultaneous release to every PC. Microsoft said it would begin with eligible devices running Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2. Availability depended on device readiness, reliability data, and other experience factors. For consumers, the original route was Settings > Windows Update; an option to receive updates as soon as they became available let users opt in to earlier availability. The offer remained subject to compatibility checks. Microsoft’s rollout announcement explains that launch process.
Should you install Windows 11 24H2 now?
Do not treat the 2024 headline’s “install it now” as current guidance. As of October 4, 2026, Microsoft’s supported-version table lists Windows 11 26H2 as available from September 29, 2026. It lists October 13, 2026 as the end-of-updates date for 24H2 Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations. For 24H2 Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise multi-session, the listed date is October 12, 2027. These dates differ by edition, so check which edition your PC runs and use the version offered through Windows Update rather than assuming 24H2 is the best destination. Microsoft’s supported-version table is the reference for availability and servicing dates.

For a consumer PC, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Review the offered update and its version before installing. Windows Update availability is device-specific; the fact that a release is listed as available does not mean it will be offered to every device at once. For current 24H2 compatibility information, check Microsoft’s Windows 11 24H2 known-issues page.
Why is Windows 11 24H2 not showing up?
A missing offer does not by itself mean Windows Update is broken. During the original rollout, Microsoft staged availability by readiness and could apply a compatibility safeguard hold when it identified a problem with an app or device. Microsoft’s issue history documented, for example, a hold involving Intel Smart Sound Technology on some Intel 11th Gen Core processors using driver versions 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152. Microsoft advised users not to bypass that hold manually and identified newer compatible drivers as the remedy. It also recorded holds affecting certain camera and audio configurations. Those examples are historical: the cited holds were later removed after fixes, and they should not be read as current open restrictions. Check the live issue page for your device’s current status. Microsoft’s 24H2 issue history describes the documented issues and resolutions.

How do I check for Windows 11 updates?
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and wait for Windows to display available updates.
- Check the version named in the offer and install the update Windows Update presents if it is appropriate for your device. If 24H2 does not appear, consult Microsoft’s current 24H2 release-health page rather than forcing the upgrade.
The original 24H2 rollout included an opt-in setting to receive updates as soon as they were available. That setting did not override device compatibility checks, and current Windows Update options can differ because 24H2 is now an older release. Microsoft’s 2024 announcement describes the original consumer flow; use the current options shown in Settings for your PC.
What should IT administrators know about the 24H2 rollout?
Microsoft listed Windows Server Update Services (including Configuration Manager), Windows Update for Business, and the Microsoft 365 admin center as distribution channels for commercial and education environments in October 2024. It recommended targeted deployments to validate applications, devices, and infrastructure before expanding rollout. That is a managed deployment decision, not a reason for consumer users to manually install 24H2. Administrators should check current servicing and release-health information before planning a deployment. Microsoft’s rollout announcement covers the channels and deployment approach.
