These symptoms need different fixes. Try the narrowest matching option below before changing app data or repairing Windows.
First, identify the icon problem
| What you see | Likely issue | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| No icons appear anywhere on the desktop | Desktop icons may be hidden | Turn on Show desktop icons. |
| Only icons such as This PC or Recycle Bin are missing | The Windows desktop icons may be unchecked | Restore them in Desktop icon settings. |
| An icon is blank, but clicking it still opens the app | The icon display or cache may be affected | Try Microsoft’s documented icon-cache procedure. |
| A particular file, folder, or app shortcut is absent | The shortcut may have been deleted, or the Desktop folder may differ from the one you expect | Check the correct Desktop folder, then create a shortcut if needed. |
| Only one app has a persistent problem | The issue may be specific to that app | Try the app’s Repair option, if available. |
| Other Windows features also fail | There may be broader system-file corruption | Use Windows Update, then DISM and SFC as Microsoft directs. |
If all desktop icons disappeared, check visibility
Right-click an empty area of the desktop, select View, and make sure Show desktop icons is checked. This setting controls whether desktop icons are shown; it does not restore a deleted shortcut.
If only Windows icons such as This PC are missing
Restore the built-in icons through Windows personalization settings:
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select Personalize.
- Open Themes, then select Desktop icon settings.
- Select the system icons you want, such as This PC or Recycle Bin, and apply the change.
This restores selected Windows desktop icons; it will not repair an app shortcut whose target file is missing. See Microsoft’s guidance on missing desktop icons.

If icons are blank but the apps still open
A blank image does not necessarily mean the app is broken. Microsoft says blank shortcut icons can affect built-in and third-party apps in the desktop, Start menu, and taskbar, even when clicking the icon still launches the app. Its troubleshooting guidance identifies icon-cache issues and the IconHandler registry subkey as relevant causes. The cache procedure below is the documented first step; it restarts Windows Explorer, so save open work before proceeding.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Under Processes, right-click Windows Explorer and select End task. The desktop and taskbar may disappear temporarily.
- In Task Manager, select File > Run new task, enter
cmd.exe, and create the task with administrative privileges. - At the Command Prompt, run these commands one at a time:
CD /d %userprofile%AppDataLocal DEL IconCache.db /a - Return to Task Manager and select File > Run new task. Enter
explorer.exeand press Enter to restart Windows Explorer.
Microsoft says, “This process clears the icon cache and restores the display of your taskbar icons.” If blank icons remain, use the remaining steps in Microsoft Learn’s blank icons troubleshooting article. It covers Shell Experience Host and IconHandler; follow its instructions rather than guessing at registry edits.

If a specific shortcut or Desktop item is missing
Create a shortcut to a file or folder
Find the file or folder in File Explorer, right-click it, then select Show more options > Send to > Desktop (create shortcut). Some Windows installations show Send to without the extra Show more options step. For an app, open Start > All apps and drag the app to the desktop. Microsoft explains these options in its Windows desktop icon and shortcut guidance.
Check whether you are looking at the right Desktop folder
If personal files or shortcuts seem to have vanished, Windows may be showing a different Desktop folder than the one containing them. OneDrive can back up Desktop, so inspect the Desktop folder in OneDrive and compare it with the folder shown under Properties > Location for Desktop. Confirm which folder contains the items before using Microsoft’s procedure to change or move the Desktop location; moving it without checking can make the confusion worse. See Microsoft’s Desktop icon and OneDrive guidance.

If one app is affected, try Repair before Reset
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the app, open its menu, and select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair. If it is unavailable or does not resolve the issue, consider Reset.
Not every app provides these options. Repair or Reset may not address an icon-only problem, and Reset may return the app’s data or settings to a default state. Before resetting, check whether the app syncs its data or whether you have a backup. Microsoft’s Windows app repair guidance describes the available options.
If other Windows features are failing, repair system files
DISM and System File Checker are broader Windows repair tools, not the first response to one missing shortcut. If you are also seeing other signs of system-file corruption, Microsoft recommends installing the latest Windows updates and restarting, then running DISM before SFC:

If narrower fixes and system-file repair do not resolve a wider Windows problem, review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options. Choose the least disruptive option that applies and back up important files first: some recovery choices can cause data loss. Resetting or reinstalling Windows is not an appropriate first fix for a single icon.
