Apple says computer-synced photos can’t be deleted directly from the device; the supported fix is to stop syncing them from the computer that manages the photo set. If the photo is in iCloud Photos instead, deletion has a different effect: it syncs to other devices using the same Apple Account.
First, identify where the photo came from
Before changing settings or deleting anything, back up photos and videos you want to keep. Then check the source of the affected item:

- Added by computer sync: If you added the photo by connecting your iPhone to a computer, Apple says you can’t delete it directly in the Photos app on the iPhone. A gray Trash button may mean you need to stop syncing photos from that computer. Apple’s guidance on deleting photos covers this restriction.
- In iCloud Photos: Check whether iCloud Photos is enabled for the device and Apple Account. Deleting a photo in iCloud Photos also deletes it from other devices signed into that same Apple Account with iCloud Photos enabled. Apple explains how to delete photos and videos.
These are different situations: computer syncing determines whether the iPhone Photos app can delete the item directly, while iCloud Photos determines how a deletion is shared across devices.
Remove a photo that was synced from a computer
Change the photo-sync selection on the computer that manages the synced content. Apple’s steps explain how to stop photo syncing, but the exact controls depend on the computer and its software version. Follow the instructions for your Mac or Windows setup rather than relying on a menu path intended for another version.

- Connect to or open the computer used to manage photo syncing for the iPhone.
- Use Apple’s instructions for stopping photo sync to change the synced photo selection or stop syncing those photos.
- Allow the sync to complete, then check the Photos app on the iPhone again.
This addresses the iPhone’s restriction on directly deleting computer-synced photos. It does not establish that changing the selection deletes the computer’s originals.
If the photo is in iCloud Photos
Deleting an iCloud Photos item on the iPhone is not just a local cleanup: the deletion syncs to other devices using the same Apple Account with iCloud Photos enabled. If you want to keep a copy on another device, make sure it is preserved separately before deleting.

Turning off iCloud Photos sync for a device is a separate choice from deleting a photo. Apple says turning off sync for one device stops new changes—including uploads, edits, and deletions—from syncing to that device. Before changing the setting, consider whether you need full-resolution local copies and whether the device has enough storage. Optimized photos may not be original-resolution files; download originals first if you need local originals. Apple describes these choices in its iCloud Photos instructions.
If changes are not showing up
A sync delay is not proof of why the Trash button is gray, but checking the library’s sync status can help when changes do not appear. Confirm that the iPhone is signed into the expected Apple Account and check the Photos library status. Apple recommends leaving the device connected to power and Wi-Fi to sync uninterrupted overnight. See Apple’s guidance for resolving iCloud Photos sync issues.

Recover a deletion or remove it permanently
After a normal deletion, the photo or video remains in Recently Deleted for 30 days, during which you can recover it. If you permanently delete it from Recently Deleted, Apple says it cannot be recovered. Review the album before emptying it, especially when iCloud Photos is enabled.
