If KB5063878 fails with error 0x80240069 on Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft’s current guidance is to refresh and re-sync WSUS, then retry the update. Microsoft says the documented WSUS issue is resolved and that its earlier Known Issue Rollback (KIR) Group Policy is no longer needed. The failure was documented for WSUS deployment; Microsoft does not identify a separate SCCM or Configuration Manager-specific cause.

What the KB5063878 error 0x80240069 means

KB5063878 is Microsoft’s August 12, 2025 security update for Windows 11 version 24H2, listed as OS build 26100.4946. Microsoft documented that installation could fail with error 0x80240069 when the update was deployed through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). The update applies to Windows 11 24H2 across editions, but Microsoft says the WSUS deployment issue is unlikely to affect home users because WSUS is intended for business and enterprise environments.

Microsoft’s KB5063878 support article, published August 12, 2025 and updated in its change log on May 26, 2026, says the issue has been resolved. The current instruction for affected organizations is: “If you experienced this problem, refresh, and re-sync with WSUS to install this update.”

Fix KB5063878 when it fails through WSUS

  1. Verify the affected update and device. Confirm that the target is running Windows 11 version 24H2 and that the failed update is KB5063878 (OS build 26100.4946).
  2. Refresh and re-sync WSUS. In your organization’s WSUS workflow, refresh and synchronize WSUS, then retry installing KB5063878 on the affected target. Microsoft gives these steps as the resolution for the documented failure.
  3. Check synchronization settings. For this update, Microsoft lists Windows 11 as the product and Security Updates as the classification.
  4. Review the deployment result. If the retry still fails, do not assume that every 0x80240069 error has the same cause. Microsoft’s guidance addresses this specific update’s WSUS deployment issue; it does not diagnose local WSUS health, policy, connectivity, or unrelated update failures.

Do you still need the KIR Group Policy?

No. The earlier workaround used a special Known Issue Rollback Group Policy. Microsoft now says: “Organizations no longer need to install and configure this Group Policy to address this issue.” If your organization applied that policy for the KB5063878 failure, it is no longer needed to resolve this particular problem. Avoid newly installing or configuring it for this issue.

Does the fix apply to SCCM or Configuration Manager?

The KB describes the 0x80240069 failure as a WSUS deployment issue. It does not document a distinct failure or root cause specific to SCCM, now commonly called Configuration Manager or ConfigMgr. If your deployment uses Configuration Manager and relies on WSUS for update synchronization, the WSUS guidance may be relevant to that update path; Microsoft’s article does not establish a separate ConfigMgr-specific fix.

When to install the update manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog

If an administrator needs to test or install the package outside the WSUS route, Microsoft documents downloading the standalone update from the Microsoft Update Catalog and installing it with DISM, PowerShell’s Add-WindowsPackage, or Windows Update Standalone Installer. This is an alternative installation path, not a separately documented SCCM fix. Follow your organization’s update and change-control policies before using a manual package.

Microsoft notes that standalone installation may require packages to be installed in a specified order. For individual installation, its KB lists KB5043080 before KB5063878. Consult the KB’s installation instructions for the appropriate command and package details rather than guessing at command-line options.

WSUS retry or standalone install: which route should you use?

Route How it works Operational consideration
Refresh and re-sync WSUS Retry KB5063878 through the existing centrally managed deployment after refreshing and synchronizing WSUS. Preserves the organization’s managed update workflow and its associated oversight.
Standalone Catalog package Download the MSU package from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install it with a Microsoft-documented servicing tool. Provides a local or manual route when permitted by deployment policy; administrators must account for any required package order.

Microsoft documents both channels and the available installation tools, but does not rank them by speed or success rate. For the documented WSUS error, start with Microsoft’s WSUS refresh and re-sync guidance; use a standalone install only when your operational needs and policy call for it.
