If apps take a long time to open on your Windows PC, first check whether the delay affects one app or many. Then work through these eight low-risk checks before trying app resets, a clean boot, or Windows file repairs. No single setting fixes every launch delay; Microsoft lists several possible contributors, including low storage, background activity, outdated software, and hardware limitations.
1. Find out whether the delay affects one app or many
Open a few different applications and note whether they are all slow. Also compare the first launch after signing in with launches after Windows has been running for a while. This helps narrow the troubleshooting: a problem limited to one app calls for app-specific steps, while delays across several apps point toward checking Windows, system load, or startup activity. These observations help frame the problem but do not identify its cause by themselves.
2. Check available storage and current workload
Check free space
Open File Explorer, select This PC, and check the available space on the drive where Windows is installed. Low storage can contribute to poor performance and can interfere with updates. If space is tight, use Windows storage settings or remove files you recognize and no longer need; do not delete unfamiliar system files or rely on arbitrary cleanup tools. See Microsoft’s Windows performance tips.
Reduce the load and retest
Close browser tabs and apps you are not using, restart the PC, and then test the affected app before reopening other programs. If it opens faster, concurrent workload may have contributed. If the delay remains, continue with the next checks rather than assuming the app itself is broken.

3. Install available Windows updates
Check for Windows updates and, where offered, optional driver updates. Microsoft includes these among its performance troubleshooting steps. In Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update; in Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Review optional updates before installing them, particularly on a work-managed PC where an administrator may control updates. Update labels and availability can vary by Windows release and device.
4. Disable recognized, nonessential startup apps
Apps that run at sign-in can compete for resources while Windows is getting ready. Turn off only entries you recognize and do not need at sign-in—do not casually disable security software or unfamiliar items on a managed computer.

- In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps.
- Review the listed apps and their impact labels. In Task Manager, those labels describe startup impact, not how long a particular app takes to open.
- Switch off or disable a recognized, nonessential app, then restart and test. You can turn it back on if needed.
For the Task Manager impact categories and startup controls, see Microsoft’s startup-app guidance. The controls and labels may vary by Windows version.
5. Repair the affected app before resetting it
If only one supported app is slow, try its repair option first. In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s More options menu, choose Advanced options, then select Repair if it is available. Repair is intended to fix the app without proceeding directly to a reset.

If Repair is missing or does not help, Reset is a later option in the same area. Reset can affect the app’s data or saved state, so check the app’s own guidance and back up anything important first. Not every traditional desktop program offers these Settings controls. For Store apps, follow the applicable app troubleshooting route. Microsoft documents these options at Repair apps and programs in Windows.
6. Use a clean boot to test for background software conflicts
A clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs, making it easier to identify background software conflicts affecting apps or games. It is a diagnostic test, not a permanent performance setting, and it may temporarily reduce functionality. Use it only if you are comfortable changing startup settings; on a work-managed PC, ask IT for guidance first.

Use DISM and System File Checker when there are broader signs of Windows component or system-file damage—not as routine app-launch accelerators. Open Command Prompt as administrator, run the commands in Microsoft’s documented order, and allow each to finish before starting the next:

These built-in scans can take time. A successful repair does not prove that file corruption caused the slow launch. See Microsoft’s instructions at Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
8. Consider hardware only after checking the specific PC
On an older PC with outdated hardware, software troubleshooting may not produce a significant improvement. Microsoft notes that upgrading may be necessary in some cases. An internal SSD could be relevant if diagnostics point to old or constrained storage, but it is not a universal fix for slow app launches.
Before buying a drive, check the exact PC model and confirm the supported drive type, form factor, interface, and whether the storage is upgradeable. Without that information and a diagnosis, there is no reliable way to recommend a particular part. Microsoft’s general guidance is in its Windows performance tips.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on that date. This lifecycle status does not diagnose a slow app, but it matters when deciding how to maintain a Windows 10 PC. See Microsoft’s performance guidance and Windows 10 support notice.
