Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo help a Windows 11 PC start faster and feel more responsive, begin with five reversible built-in changes: disable unnecessary startup apps, free space on the system drive, install Windows updates, reduce visual effects, and use Best performance power mode when battery life is not the priority. The results depend on what is slowing the PC; none guarantees a specific boot-time improvement.
1. Disable apps you do not need at startup
Apps that launch when you sign in can lengthen startup and keep using resources in the background. Turn off only apps you recognize and do not need to start automatically.
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Switch off apps you do not want to launch when you sign in.
You can also open Task Manager > Startup apps. Its startup-impact column can help you decide what to investigate first. Microsoft defines Low Impact as total CPU usage below 300 milliseconds and disk usage below 292 kilobytes; High Impact means CPU usage above one second or disk usage above 3 megabytes. These are thresholds for the displayed categories, not estimates of how many seconds you will save. If an app is unfamiliar, find out what it does before disabling it.
2. Free space on the Windows system drive
A nearly full system drive can affect performance and make it harder to install Windows upgrades. To review cleanup options, open Settings > System > Storage. You can use Storage Sense or the cleanup recommendations shown there.

Check the cleanup settings before enabling automatic deletion. Storage Sense works on the Windows system drive, usually C:. Downloads and cloud files are not managed by default unless you configure those options, so review what will be removed rather than assuming every personal file is protected or included.
3. Check Windows Update
Windows updates often include fixes and performance improvements. Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Review optional driver updates thoughtfully: a driver may help with a particular issue, but optional does not mean it will make every PC faster. Save your work first, since an update may require a restart.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
4. Reduce visual effects for a more responsive feel
Windows visual effects use system resources, and reducing them may make the interface feel more responsive. Search Windows for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open the matching settings, select the Visual Effects tab, then choose Adjust for best performance.
This prioritizes responsiveness over appearance. Windows may look less polished, so treat the change as a preference to try rather than a required setting.

5. Use Best performance power mode when it suits the situation
When the PC is plugged in and you need maximum performance, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and select Best performance. This mode uses more power. On a laptop, it can drain the battery faster and make the device warmer, so choose another mode when conserving battery matters more.

These settings address common causes, but a slow PC may have a different problem. Use Task Manager’s Processes and Performance views to look for apps consuming substantial CPU, memory, or disk resources; close apps you are not using. If malware may be consuming resources, run a malware scan. Other possible steps include restarting when many apps or browser tabs are open, uninstalling unused apps, and optimizing drives.

If performance remains poor, identify the cause before buying hardware. A RAM or SSD upgrade may help some systems, but the right option depends on the PC and its actual bottleneck; consult the computer maker or a technician about diagnosis and compatibility. Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.
