It may be. A July 2025 report described emails falsely claiming that Prime would renew at an unexpectedly high price, then directing recipients to a fake Amazon sign-in page through a cancellation link. Don’t click the link: open Amazon’s app or type its address yourself to check your membership and account.

What the July 2025 warning said

Malwarebytes reported on July 16, 2025, that Amazon had warned an audience of 200 million customers about impersonation emails claiming a Prime membership would automatically renew at an unexpected price. That figure describes the audience reported in that article; it is not a current count of Amazon customers, and the report does not establish that every recipient was individually targeted. Malwarebytes’ account of the warning reproduces Amazon’s wording: “Scammers are sending fake emails claiming your Amazon Prime subscription will automatically renew at an unexpected price.”

The email may include a “cancel subscription” button that takes you to a counterfeit Amazon login page. If you enter your details, scammers can capture your Amazon credentials, payment information, or other personal information. A password reused on other sites could put those accounts at risk too. Personal details or familiar branding in a message do not prove it came from Amazon.

This is a phishing and impersonation scheme, not evidence that Amazon’s systems were breached. It also does not mean every Prime renewal notice is fraudulent.

How to check whether the message is genuine

  1. Don’t use the message’s link or phone number. An unexpected renewal price followed by pressure to cancel matches the reported lure. Avoid attachments and don’t reply with account details.
  2. Open Amazon independently. Use the Amazon app or type Amazon’s address into your browser. Check your Prime membership, order history, and account details there. Amazon’s guidance is to confirm account information directly before acting on an unexpected message. Amazon’s scam-prevention guidance also says it will not ask for payment by phone or email; its stated payment channels are its app, website, or a physical store.
  3. For UK accounts, check the Message Centre. Amazon UK says authentic emails can be reviewed there. This can help you verify a message, but do not sign in through a link in the suspicious email. Amazon UK’s guidance on identifying whether an email is from Amazon describes the check.

How to report the email safely

Use Amazon’s report-a-scam tool or follow the reporting instructions in Amazon’s scam-prevention guidance. Amazon’s general overview also lists reportascam@amazon.com. For UK users, Amazon UK lists verify@amazon.co.uk for forwarding suspicious messages; that address is UK-specific. Amazon UK’s identification guidance provides the local details.

What to do if you entered your details

  • Change your Amazon password using the app or website you opened directly. If you used that password elsewhere, change it on every affected account as well.
  • Turn on two-step verification for your Amazon account to add a sign-in check.
  • Review payment activity. Check statements for unfamiliar charges and contact your bank promptly if you find one.
  • Reject unsolicited requests to install software or share a one-time passcode. Amazon warns against callers pressuring people to install software or provide remote access to a device. Don’t follow those instructions to “fix” an account.

Amazon’s current guidance says 28% of Amazon-impersonation scams reported by customers globally in 2025 involved attempts to access customer accounts. Amazon also says it targeted more than 70,000 phishing websites and 14,000 phone numbers for takedown in 2025. Those are Amazon-reported figures and actions, not independently audited measures of how many victims were affected or how effective the takedowns were. Amazon’s guidance on scams and prevention provides the figures and recommends going directly to its app or website when a message is in doubt.
