If copy and paste is not working on your iPhone or iPad, first check whether you are pasting on the same device or trying to move content between Apple devices. Same-device copying depends on selecting content and using the destination app’s Paste command; copying between devices uses Universal Clipboard and also requires nearby devices, matching Apple Accounts, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff.
1. Check the selection, Copy command, and destination app
For copying and pasting on one iPhone or iPad, Apple’s basic sequence is to select the content, tap Copy, tap the place where you want it, then tap Paste. See Apple’s copy and paste instructions for iPhone.
- Touch and hold the text, then adjust the selection handles if needed.
- Tap Copy in the menu.
- Open or return to the destination app and tap the text field or other insertion point.
- Tap Paste.
If nothing appears, make sure the selection contains the content you intended to copy. Then try pasting into a different ordinary text field. If it works there, the problem may be specific to the original destination app or the type of content being pasted; not every app accepts every kind of copied item.
For an image, touch and hold it, tap Copy, then tap where you want the image and choose Paste. Available options depend on the image and app. Apple’s iPad copy and paste guide describes the image steps.

2. Check Universal Clipboard when copying between Apple devices
If you copy on one Apple device and paste on another, the feature is Universal Clipboard. It works like ordinary copy and paste, but both devices need to meet Apple’s Continuity requirements:
- Keep the devices near each other. Apple’s iPhone guide specifies within 30 feet (10 meters).
- Sign in to the same Apple Account on both devices.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices.
- Enable Handoff on each device.
On an iPhone or iPad, find Handoff at Settings > General > AirPlay & Continuity > Handoff. Turn it on for each device. Apple documents the requirements in its Universal Clipboard support article and iPhone guide to copying between devices.

There is no separate Universal Clipboard screen to open: copy on one device, then paste on the other. The copied content is temporary. Apple Support says, “The content will remain there briefly, or until you replace it by copying something else on either device.” If you copied something new on either device before pasting, copy the intended content again and retry.
If a VPN is in use, check that its configuration does not block local networking; Apple notes that this can interfere with some Continuity features. This check applies to cross-device copying, not ordinary copy and paste on one device.

Confirm device compatibility
Apple lists Universal Clipboard support for iPhone 5 or later and these iPad families: iPad Pro (all models), iPad (4th generation or later), iPad Air (all models), and iPad mini 2 or later. Apple’s stated software minimum is iOS 10 or later or iPadOS. Requirements can change, so consult Apple’s live Continuity system requirements if you are checking an older or newer device.

If Universal Clipboard still does not work after checking its setup, Apple’s troubleshooting guidance is to install available Apple software updates, restart the devices, and verify the setup and proximity requirements again.
