Apple released the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max in 2024. They share the A18 Pro chip and the same core rear-camera system, including a 5x telephoto camera. The practical choice is mostly about size, weight, starting storage and Apple’s battery estimate: choose the 6.3-inch Pro for a smaller, lighter phone, or the 6.9-inch Pro Max for a larger screen, 256GB starting capacity and longer rated video playback.

Apple announced the phones on September 9, 2024, and availability began September 20, 2024. Apple’s launch announcement and the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max specification pages provide the figures.
Should I get the iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max?
Choose the iPhone 16 Pro if handling matters most
The Pro is 28 grams lighter and has a smaller footprint. That can make a difference if you often use your phone one-handed, carry it in a small pocket, or prefer a device that is less cumbersome to hold. Its 128GB starting option also gives buyers a lower-capacity configuration than the Max offers, though actual availability depends on the seller and market.
Choose the iPhone 16 Pro Max for screen space and base storage
The 6.9-inch display gives more room for reading, video and app layouts, but the phone is both larger and heavier. Its base storage is 256GB—twice the Pro’s 128GB starting capacity. If you keep a large photo or video library on your phone, compare the capacity and price of the specific listings rather than assuming the Max is a better value.

#1 Best Overall
- Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.
How much longer does the Pro Max battery last?
Apple rates the iPhone 16 Pro Max for up to 33 hours of video playback and the iPhone 16 Pro for up to 27 hours. The Max also has an Apple rating of up to 29 hours of streamed video playback. These are manufacturer estimates under specified test conditions, not guarantees for daily use; Apple says actual results vary. Background activity, network conditions, settings and how you use the phone can affect endurance.
Are the cameras different?
The two models share the same core rear-camera setup: a 48MP Fusion camera, a 48MP Ultra Wide camera and a 12MP 5x Telephoto camera. The 5x optical telephoto is not exclusive to the Pro Max. Apple lists a 24mm-equivalent Fusion camera, a 13mm-equivalent Ultra Wide camera with a 120-degree field of view, and a 120mm-equivalent Telephoto camera. Apple’s specifications also describe a 10x optical zoom range and up to 25x digital zoom.

Both models support 48MP macro photography, spatial photos and spatial video. Their shared camera system means choosing the Max does not buy you a different core set of rear lenses; choose between them based on screen size, weight, storage and battery estimates instead.
Video recording and external storage
Both phones can record Dolby Vision video at up to 4K and 120 frames per second on the Fusion camera. Apple also specifies ProRes and Log workflows, including ProRes recording at 4K/120 fps to external storage. That workflow requires compatible external storage and a suitable USB-C cable; check Apple’s technical specifications and the storage device’s requirements before relying on it for a shoot. The USB-C charge cable included in the box is one metre long, but the phone does not include a power adapter.

Shared features and practical limits
- Performance: Both use Apple’s A18 Pro chip, with a six-core CPU, six-core GPU and 16-core Neural Engine.
- Display technology: Both use Super Retina XDR OLED displays with Always-On and ProMotion up to 120Hz.
- Materials: Both have a titanium design, a textured matte glass back and a latest-generation Ceramic Shield front.
- Water and dust resistance: Apple specifies IP68 protection under IEC 60529, tested at up to 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. This is not a promise that a phone is waterproof or that liquid damage will be covered.
- Wireless charging: Apple lists MagSafe charging up to 25W with a 30W-or-higher power adapter, Qi2 up to 15W, and Qi up to 7.5W. Wireless chargers and the power adapter are sold separately.
- In the box: Apple lists the phone, a 1-metre USB-C charge cable and documentation; it does not include a power adapter or EarPods.
What to check before buying one now
These are 2024 models, so listings may differ in condition, seller, storage and regional configuration. Launch specifications do not establish current prices, stock or the quality of an individual listing. Before buying, check:
- Condition and seller: Confirm whether the phone is new, refurbished or used, and understand the seller’s return policy and warranty terms.
- Storage: Compare the exact capacity in the listing. The Pro starts at 128GB; the Pro Max starts at 256GB; both were offered in configurations up to 1TB.
- Region and model number: US specifications describe dual eSIM and no physical SIM compatibility. Apple notes that models bought outside the US have physical SIM trays. Confirm the exact regional model rather than assuming imported phones match US configurations.
- Carrier and eSIM support: Check that your carrier supports eSIM on the specific model and that the device’s carrier status and service terms suit your needs.
- Accessories: The included cable is USB-C, but a power adapter is not in the box. For Apple’s listed 25W MagSafe rate, the adapter must be 30W or higher.
Apple’s 2024 launch materials also state that the phones contain more than 25% recycled content by device mass, excluding packaging and in-box accessories, and that the battery uses 100% recycled cobalt. Those are Apple’s published environmental claims.
