Start with the task you need to solve—payments, marketing, product options, subscriptions, coupons, analytics, or another operation—then check the plugin’s price, geographic availability, compatibility, maintenance, and support. WooCommerce’s official marketplace offers hundreds of free and paid extensions, but marketplace presence alone does not prove that an extension is right for your business.
How to choose WooCommerce plugins
WooCommerce is an ecommerce plugin for WordPress. Its official WordPress.org listing points store owners to hundreds of free and paid extensions in the WooCommerce Marketplace. Think of plugins as tools for particular workflows, not a checklist every store must complete.
For each candidate, ask:
- What job does it do? Identify the specific customer or operational need before adding an extension.
- What will it cost? Check whether the listing is a free download, a recurring license, or a connection to a separately billed service. A free download does not establish that every connected service or use case is free.
- Does it work where you operate? Payment providers and other integrations can have country, provider, and payment-method requirements.
- Is it maintained and supported? Check the current changelog, compatibility details, documentation, and support information for the individual extension.
- Is it necessary? Avoid installing a feature you do not need; each plugin adds another product and support relationship to manage.
Browse the WooCommerce Marketplace by task, then verify details on the relevant live listing. Marketplace categories and customer ratings can help with discovery, but they are not independent comparative performance tests.

Payments and checkout
WooCommerce’s WordPress.org listing names more than 100 payment gateways, with examples including Stripe, PayPal, and Square. The marketplace page checked also displayed WooPayments, Stripe, and PayPal Payments as free downloads. These are different provider options, not evidence that one will suit every merchant. Compare supported countries, payment methods, provider requirements, and applicable fees on the relevant provider’s current information. The cited listings do not establish comparative checkout performance or total payment costs.
WooPayments is described on the marketplace as integrated with WooCommerce, but the WordPress.org listing limits its availability to named countries. Check the current country list before choosing it; do not assume availability simply because the extension appears in the marketplace.
Marketing and customer communication
For customer communication and marketing workflows, marketplace examples include MailPoet and Klaviyo. WooCommerce’s WordPress.org listing also names integrations such as Mailchimp, HubSpot, Google Ads, and Facebook. Choose based on the channels and features your store actually requires, and check any paid-plan requirements with the provider. The official listings cited here do not compare deliverability, feature limits, or independent marketing performance.
Product options, subscriptions, and coupons
Extensions can support store-specific workflows such as adding options to products, selling subscriptions, or managing coupons. Marketplace examples include Product Add-Ons, WooCommerce Subscriptions, and Smart Coupons. Compare the extension’s current feature scope and license cost with the workflow you need; a feature category alone does not make a product necessary.
Analytics and store operations
Google Analytics for WooCommerce was shown as a free download on the marketplace page checked. The marketplace also lists operational extensions, including options for shipping or payment conditions. Verify the current listing and make sure its functions match your reporting or operations requirements rather than installing it solely because it is available.
What the marketplace prices show—and do not show
The official marketplace page checked displayed these examples:
| Marketplace example | Displayed price or status | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| WooPayments | Free download | Country availability, payment methods, provider requirements, and applicable fees |
| Stripe | Free download | Provider requirements and applicable fees |
| PayPal Payments | Free download | Provider requirements and applicable fees |
| Google Analytics for WooCommerce | Free download | Current listing and the reporting workflow you need |
| WooCommerce Subscriptions | $279 annually | Current license price and whether subscription features fit your store |
| Product Add-Ons | $79 annually | Current license price and the product-option features included |
| Smart Coupons | $129 annually | Current license price and the coupon workflow supported |
| MailPoet | Paid plans starting at $10 per month | Current plan terms and the features or usage limits that apply |
These are point-in-time examples from the marketplace page, not a stable price guide. Confirm current prices, billing terms, and any connected service charges before purchase. “Free download” describes the extension listing; it does not establish that all related services or transactions have no cost.

Before installing an extension on a live store, review evidence for that specific product. Marketplace quality and review processes can be useful discovery signals, but they do not replace checking current plugin-level information.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Review the latest changelog and whether the developer is maintaining the extension.
- Check the stated WooCommerce and WordPress compatibility against the versions your store runs.
- Read the documentation for setup requirements and limitations that affect your workflow.
- Confirm what support is included, how it is provided, and whether the license covers the sites where you plan to use it.
- For payment integrations, check provider requirements and current maintenance information. WooCommerce’s marketplace guidance describes maintenance expectations for payment integrations: Marketplace monetization expectations.
WooCommerce describes its marketplace review process and partner requirements in its own materials; these are signals about the marketplace, not guarantees that a particular plugin fits your store. See Marketplace partner getting started for the stated partner criteria and revenue-share information.
A practical way to build your plugin set
- Write down the unmet need. For example, you may need a payment method available in your country, recurring billing, or a way to offer product choices.
- Find extensions for that task. Use the marketplace category and inspect the individual listing rather than choosing by category or rating alone.
- Compare total cost and constraints. Include annual or monthly licenses, provider requirements, geographic availability, and any separately billed service or applicable transaction fees.
- Check maintenance and support. Review compatibility, changelog, documentation, and support details before adding the extension to the store.
- Install only what solves a real workflow. Reassess a plugin if the need disappears or the product no longer meets your compatibility or support requirements.
