No. “Windows 12 Lite” in the 2020 report was an unofficial Linux distribution—not a Microsoft Windows release. The reviewed material does not establish that it was three times faster than Windows 10 or immune to ransomware. Those were promotional claims, not verified results.

What was “Windows 12 Lite”?

BetaNews reported on February 10, 2020, that Windows 12 Lite was a modified version of Linux Lite 4.8 LTS, given Windows-style imagery including Windows 10 wallpaper and flat icons. It was not an official Microsoft product. The name can therefore mislead: the report concerned Linux-based software using Windows branding, not a release of Windows 12. BetaNews’s report documents what was claimed at the time; it is not a current product listing.

Was it really three times faster than Windows 10?

That claim is not substantiated by the reviewed evidence. BetaNews relayed the “3x faster” promotion, but the report provides no benchmark publisher, test configuration, workload, measurements, or methodology that would support a speed comparison. There is no basis here to present the figure as a measured result or to conclude that Windows 12 Lite outperformed Windows 10.

Was it immune from ransomware?

No evidence in the reviewed report establishes ransomware immunity. It provides no security audit, threat model, or malware-test results supporting the claim. An operating system should not be described as immune on this evidence; the accurate statement is that the promotional claim was unsupported by the material reviewed.

What was Linux Lite 4.8, and what did it offer?

Linux Lite 4.8 was a real, free Linux distribution. Its official release announcement, dated January 13, 2020, presented it as a Linux-based alternative for Windows 7 users, with a familiar desktop layout, applications, help materials, and system-backup tools. The project described its software offering as including a “full, Microsoft compatible Office suite,” Firefox, Chrome, TeamViewer, VLC, Steam, and other familiar software. That description belongs to the Linux Lite 4.8 release; it does not validate the separate Windows 12 Lite branding or its speed and security claims. Linux Lite 4.8 release announcement

Could Linux Lite 4.8 be installed on an older PC?

The project’s 2020 announcement listed these minimum recommended specifications for Linux Lite 4.8:

These are the project’s historical specifications for version 4.8, not current recommendations for Linux distributions generally. The announcement says installation media could be a USB stick or writable DVD; its instructions specify a USB stick of at least 2 GB. These details describe Linux Lite 4.8 installation, not a recommendation to obtain a Windows 12 Lite-branded disc.

What can—and cannot—be compared with Windows 10?

The available information is enough to identify the reported software as Linux-based and to describe Linux Lite 4.8’s historical installation options and stated minimum requirements. It is not enough to compare Windows 12 Lite with Windows 10 on speed, security, software compatibility, or long-term support. No supported scorecard or performance verdict can be drawn from the “3x faster” and ransomware-immunity slogans.
