To delete every email in Gmail’s Promotions category at once, use Gmail on a computer: open Promotions, select the page, click the link to select all conversations in the category, then click Delete. The extra selection link matters—checking the box alone selects only the conversations shown on the current page.
1. Delete everything in Promotions on a computer
Gmail’s documented bulk-deletion workflow is for a computer. Follow these steps to select the whole Promotions view rather than just its first page:
- Open Gmail on your computer and choose Promotions in the left navigation.
- Click the checkbox above the message list. This selects the conversations on the current page.
- In the notice above the list, click the link to select all conversations matching the Promotions view.
- Click Delete.
Do not skip step three if you want to clear the entire category. Without it, the selection remains limited to the current page.
2. Delete only promotions that match a search
Use Gmail search when you want to preserve some messages—for example, newer promotions—or target unread messages. Search first, inspect the results, and only then select and delete them.

Limit by date
Enter category:promotions before:2019-01-01 to find promotions dated before January 1, 2019, as in an example discussed in the Gmail Help Community. Replace the date with the cutoff you need. Gmail’s search-operator reference explains supported operators and syntax.
Limit to unread promotions
To find unread messages in the category, a Help Community example uses category:promotions is:unread. Check the results before deleting; the search defines the scope of the bulk action.

Delete the matching results
- Run your search and verify that the results are the messages you intend to remove.
- Select the checkbox above the results. As with the category view, this initially selects only the current page.
- If Gmail displays a notice with a link to select all conversations matching the search, click that link to expand the selection.
- Click Delete.
3. Split a very large deletion into smaller searches
If a bulk deletion involving a very large number of messages errors or triggers suspicious-activity handling, try narrowing the search and processing smaller batches. For example, divide the messages by date, check each result set, and delete one batch at a time. A Help Community reply about a large Promotions cleanup recommends this approach, but Google does not establish a universal safe batch size or guarantee that smaller batches will resolve every failure.
What happens after you click Delete?
Deleting messages moves them to Trash; it does not permanently erase them. From Trash, you can restore messages, permanently delete selected messages, or empty the trash. See Google’s guide to organizing and archiving email for these options.

Which method should you use?

Can you use the Gmail mobile app?
Google’s reviewed bulk-selection instructions describe the computer workflow. They do not establish that every version of the Gmail mobile app offers the same link for selecting all conversations matching a category. For the documented all-category procedure, use Gmail on a computer.
