RSAT (Remote Server Administration Tools) is a set of Windows utilities for managing Windows Server roles and features from a Windows client. It is not one all-in-one console: install the components you need, such as Active Directory, DNS, or Group Policy tools, then use those tools to connect to servers where you have the required permissions and network access.
What RSAT is—and what it is not
Microsoft describes RSAT as a collection of utilities that lets IT administrators remotely manage Windows Server roles and features from a Windows client. Depending on the task, the utilities include Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-ins, PowerShell modules, command-line tools, and Server Manager.
RSAT is installed as individual capabilities for particular administrative tasks. It is not a separate server operating system, nor does installing it by itself grant access to a remote computer.
Check whether your Windows edition and device are supported
For client installation, Microsoft lists Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise, and Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise with the October 2018 cumulative update or later. Windows Home is not supported for RSAT client installation; Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance also excludes Windows Standard editions. Administrative rights are required to install tools.

To manage a remote server, you also need appropriate privileges on that server and network connectivity to it. Those are separate from installing RSAT: a tool can install successfully and still be unable to connect or perform an operation if the account, server configuration, or network does not permit it.
Install RSAT on a supported Windows 11 PC
Install only the capabilities required for your work. The Settings route is the simplest for most users; PowerShell is useful when you want to inspect available capabilities or install a specific one.
Use Settings
- Open Settings > System > Optional features.
- Select View features beside “Add an optional feature.”
- Search for the RSAT component you need, select it, and choose Next, then Add.
- After installation, find the relevant console in Windows Tools or, where applicable, in Server Manager’s Tools menu.
Microsoft’s installation guidance is at Install Remote Server Administration Tools.

Use PowerShell
Open PowerShell as an administrator. List available RSAT capabilities with:

Get-WindowsCapability -Online | Where-Object Name -like 'RSAT*'
Copy the exact capability name for the component you want, then install it with:
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name <capability>
For example, Microsoft identifies the Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services capability as:
Rank #3
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name Rsat.ActiveDirectory.DS-LDS.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0
Use the capability name returned for your Windows installation rather than assuming every component is available through every deployment path. Microsoft’s client installation instructions are documented at Microsoft Learn.
Installing tools on Windows Server is a different process
The client Optional Features and Windows capability steps above are for Windows client installations. On Windows Server, Microsoft documents adding the relevant tools through Server Manager > Add Roles and Features or with the Install-WindowsFeature PowerShell cmdlet. Do not use the client instructions as though they were the server installation workflow.

Rank #4
| Task | RSAT component or tool |
|---|---|
| Manage Active Directory Domain Services or Lightweight Directory Services | RSAT: Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services Tools |
| Manage DNS zones and records | DNS Server Tools |
| Manage shares, quotas, and file-server resources | File Services Tools |
| Manage network controller services | Network Controller Management Tools |
| Manage remote access services | Remote Access Management Tools |
| Manage volume activation | Volume Activation Tools |
| Manage multiple servers and roles from a graphical console | Server Manager |
Tool availability is not identical across Windows client Features on Demand, Windows Server, and DISM installation methods. Check Microsoft’s component availability table for the platform and installation method you intend to use: RSAT installation and availability guidance.
For Active Directory administration
Install RSAT: Active Directory Domain Services and Lightweight Directory Services Tools. Its capability name is Rsat.ActiveDirectory.DS-LDS.Tools~~~~0.0.1.0. After installation, open the applicable Active Directory console from Windows Tools or Server Manager, then connect to or select the directory environment you are authorized to administer.
Open a console and connect to a remote server
Once the appropriate component is installed, launch its management console from Windows Tools or, for supported tools, Server Manager’s Tools menu. In Microsoft’s DNS example, an administrator installs DNS Server Tools and opens DNS Manager, then connects to a different DNS server. The particular console and connection steps depend on the role you are managing.
Best Value
Server Manager can manage roles and features on multiple remote servers from one console when the target servers are configured to allow remote management. Installation on your client does not automatically configure remote management on those servers.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance identifies a platform-specific exception for Windows 11 version 25H2 on Arm64. It says some RSAT snap-ins are accessed through Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off. The listed snap-ins are Active Directory DS-LDS Tools, Active Directory Certificate Services Tools, Server Manager, Group Policy Management Tools, DNS Server Tools, and DHCP Server Tools.
Microsoft’s Features on Demand reference separately states that RSAT Features on Demand are not supported for Windows 11 version 25H2 on Arm64. Because these Microsoft references describe a specific exception and installation path, verify current guidance for the device’s architecture and Windows build before following the usual client steps. See Microsoft’s RSAT troubleshooting guidance and Features on Demand reference.
RSAT, PowerShell, and Windows Admin Center
RSAT is one part of Microsoft’s Windows Server management toolkit, alongside Server Manager, PowerShell, and Windows commands. It is useful when you need a particular Windows administration console, module, or command-line tool on a client PC.
Microsoft describes Windows Admin Center as a modern evolution of in-box tools such as Server Manager and MMC, and as a complement to other management solutions. The sources do not establish a universal feature-by-feature winner: choose based on the role and task, whether you need a graphical or command-line workflow, target-server configuration and permissions, and whether the client platform supports the needed component. See Windows Admin Center overview.
