To turn off a tablet, use the shutdown controls for its brand and model; button combinations are not universal. Follow the steps below for an iPad, Samsung Galaxy tablet, or Amazon Fire tablet. If the screen is frozen, use the maker’s force-restart instructions instead of a normal shutdown.
Turn off an iPad
The button sequence depends on whether your iPad has a Home button. Apple also provides software-based shutdown options on supported software.
iPad without a Home button
- Press and hold the top button and either volume button until the power-off slider appears.
- Drag the slider and wait for the iPad to turn off.
iPad with a Home button
- Press and hold the top button until the power-off slider appears.
- Drag the slider and wait for the iPad to turn off.
Use Settings or Control Center
To shut down through Settings, open Settings > General, then choose Shut Down. Apple also documents a power control in Control Center on supported software. See Apple’s Turn iPad on or off guide for the applicable controls.
Turn off a Samsung Galaxy tablet
Samsung’s Canada instructions, last updated July 2, 2026, describe these options for Galaxy devices. Button layouts and software availability can vary by model, carrier, and software version.

Use the hardware buttons
- Models with a Side button: Hold Side and Volume Down until the power menu appears. Tap Power off, then tap Power off again to confirm.
- Models with a dedicated Power button: Hold Power to open the menu. Tap Power off twice to confirm.
Use Quick Settings
On supported newer devices, open Quick Settings, tap the power icon, and confirm shutdown. Samsung’s Galaxy power instructions explain the available routes.
Turn off an Amazon Fire tablet
- Hold the power button for up to three seconds, until a shutdown request appears.
- Select OK and wait for the tablet to turn off.
To turn it on again, hold the power button for two to three seconds. These steps come from Amazon’s Fire Tablet restart instructions.

If the tablet is frozen or unresponsive
A force restart is different from a routine shutdown: it reboots the device rather than using the normal on-screen shutdown flow. If the screen will not respond, use the instructions for your exact model rather than repeatedly trying to reach a slider.
- iPad: Follow Apple’s model-specific force-restart instructions.
- Samsung Galaxy Tab: Samsung UK says to hold Power and Volume Down together for more than seven seconds until the tablet reboots. The steps may differ by model; consult Samsung’s frozen Galaxy Tab guidance if this combination does not match your device.
Shutdown, sleep, and battery saving are different
A short press of a button may put a tablet to sleep or wake it, rather than power it off. When you want a full shutdown, use the maker’s documented shutdown steps above.

If your aim is to conserve battery without turning the tablet off, Amazon lists options such as dimming the screen, shortening screen timeout, and using Battery Saver or Low Power Mode on 8th-generation and newer Fire Tablets. These features are separate from shutdown; see Amazon’s Fire Tablet power-conservation guidance.
