First identify what is crashing: the Steam client, one game, or Windows itself. Restart Steam and your PC, then use the fix that matches the symptom. If the whole computer shows a blue or gray screen or restarts, stop treating it as a Steam crash and troubleshoot Windows or the PC.
Identify what is crashing
- Steam client: Steam closes, freezes, or stops responding, but Windows and other apps continue working.
- One game: Steam stays open, but a particular game closes or fails to launch. A game that disappears after “Preparing to Launch” may be crashing independently of the client.
- The whole PC: Windows displays a blue or gray screen, or the computer restarts unexpectedly. Steam says these symptoms indicate a computer problem, not a Steam or game problem. See its blue or gray screen guidance.
Use the following fixes in order where they fit. Cache and library repairs are aimed at download, update, or installation trouble; they are not universal remedies for crashes.
Fixes for Steam or a game that closes
1. Restart the PC and Steam
Close Steam, restart the computer, and launch Steam again. This is a low-risk first check, not a guaranteed fix. Steam also recommends restarting before verifying game files in its file verification instructions.
2. Install available Windows updates
If a game closes immediately after “Preparing to Launch,” Steam recommends ensuring Windows is fully updated. Open Windows Update in Settings and check for updates; the exact menu labels can differ between Windows releases. Steam’s launch troubleshooting page links to Microsoft’s update instructions.

3. Update the Steam client
If Steam itself is failing, make sure you are using the latest client. Steam’s client troubleshooting guidance directs users to download the latest client directly from Steam. If you choose to reinstall, follow Steam’s instructions rather than uninstalling by another method: Steam warns that uninstalling incorrectly can delete games and userdata.
4. Verify the affected game’s files
Use this for a game that crashes or fails to start, especially if its installation may be damaged:

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Steam checks whether the game’s files are installed correctly; the process may take several minutes. A small number of files may fail verification normally because local configuration files are not meant to be replaced. Do not run multiple verifications at once or alongside intensive tasks such as a virus scan. See Steam’s verification instructions.
5. Clear the download cache for download or update trouble
Use this when crashing or errors occur during downloads, updates, or installation—not as a general fix for an unrelated in-game crash. In Steam, open Settings > Downloads > Clear Cache. Steam documents this step in its update and installation troubleshooting.

6. Repair the Steam library folder if updates or permissions are failing
Steam library folders must be writable. If a game update or installation is failing, open Settings > Storage, open the options for the affected library folder, and choose Repair Folder. The wording or placement may vary with the client version. This is a targeted library-permissions repair, not a general crash fix; see Steam’s update and installation guidance.
7. Check the drive for errors if installation problems persist
If file corruption or installation trouble continues, use Windows drive error checking as a diagnostic step. In File Explorer, open This PC, right-click the drive, choose Properties > Tools, then select Error checking. A check does not by itself prove the drive is defective. Steam includes this step in its installation troubleshooting guidance.

When the game or the whole PC is the problem
8. Treat a single game’s launch crash as game-specific
If Steam remains open while one game closes—particularly just after “Preparing to Launch”—start with Windows updates and verification of that game’s files. If the same game’s error remains, use the game’s developer support route or contact Steam Support rather than applying an unrelated client repair. Steam describes the “Preparing to Launch” symptom and directs users to its launch troubleshooting guidance.
9. Escalate blue screens and forced restarts to Windows or hardware troubleshooting
A blue or gray screen or an unexpected forced restart means the failure extends beyond Steam. Steam points users to Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance. If the computer slows or stutters before failing, overheating is a possibility; it is not established by that symptom alone. If Windows troubleshooting does not resolve the problem, Steam suggests contacting the computer manufacturer or a local professional.
