Start with the router or DHCP server’s connected-device or lease list. Match the wireless access point (AP) to its MAC address—usually printed on the device label—rather than guessing from a device name. If it is not listed, try a discovery tool for the AP’s brand or scan the same local network. The right method depends on the AP model, network, and whether it is managed by a controller.

Find the AP’s MAC address first

Look for the MAC address on the AP’s label or in your device inventory. If you have several APs, record each address so you can tell their entries apart. TP-Link’s standalone EAP guide specifically recommends matching the DHCP client entry to the MAC address printed on the bottom of the unit.

Check the router or DHCP server

  1. Sign in to the router or other device that provides DHCP on the AP’s network.
  2. Open the page labeled something like Connected Devices, DHCP Clients, or Leases. The exact label varies by router.
  3. Find the entry whose MAC address matches the AP. The IP address shown on that entry is the address to try for management access.
  4. Enter that IP address in a browser while connected to a network that can reach the AP. Use the AP’s official instructions if you need a specific login method.

This works when the AP obtained its address from that DHCP server. If it does not appear, that alone does not establish that the AP is offline: it may be on another network, use a manually configured address, or be managed through a controller.

Try discovery tools or a local network scan

Use the AP vendor’s discovery option

For TP-Link EAP models covered by its standalone EAP guide, the EAP Discovery Utility scans for EAPs on the same network segment. TP-Link also describes this utility in its standalone Omada access-point setup guide. Use the instructions for your exact model; same-segment discovery should not be assumed to work across a router or VLAN.

NETGEAR lists additional model-dependent options, including the Insight app and Windows network device detection, in its support instructions for finding an AP’s IP address. Availability and steps depend on the AP model and setup.

Scan the same LAN

If the router list and vendor tools do not identify the AP, a network scanner can help find devices on the same local network. NETGEAR includes an IP scanner among its suggested methods. A scan may list many devices, so compare the results’ MAC addresses and device details with the AP’s label instead of selecting an address by guesswork.

Check whether the AP is controller-managed

If the AP has been adopted by a wireless controller, look for its device entry in the controller’s management interface and follow the vendor’s instructions for accessing it. TP-Link says the standalone web page is unavailable while an EAP is managed by its controller. The controller’s own IP address is not the AP’s IP address.

Controller discovery describes how an AP finds or contacts its controller; it does not, by itself, identify the AP’s management address. Cisco’s controller discovery documentation, for example, discusses previously stored controller addresses, DHCP Option 43, and DNS discovery. To find the AP’s own address, locate the AP entry in the device list or management system.

Why an AP may not appear

  • The computer is on the wrong network segment. Confirm that it is on the segment expected by the vendor discovery utility.
  • The AP may not have a DHCP lease. Check that the DHCP server is available and whether the AP is configured to obtain an address from it.
  • The AP may be on another subnet or VLAN. Local discovery tools may not reach devices across a router or other network boundary.
  • The AP may have a manually configured address. In that case, it may not appear as a current DHCP lease; check the network configuration or management system.
  • The AP may already be controller-managed. Its standalone management page may not be available in that state.
  • You may be looking at the wrong unit. When multiple APs are installed, match the MAC address for the specific device you need.

NETGEAR’s discovery guidance for factory-default and Layer 2 devices describes limitations and setup dependencies. Network placement, firmware, DHCP availability, and existing controller management can all affect discovery, so an empty result is not proof that the AP is absent.

Use a default IP only as a model-specific fallback

Do not assume every AP shares a default address. An AP may receive a different, dynamically assigned address from DHCP, and a factory default may apply only to a particular model or configuration state—for example, before it joins a network or after a reset. Check the exact model’s official documentation before trying a default. NETGEAR’s address-finding guidance likewise makes default-address advice model- and configuration-dependent.
