You may be able to install the current Windows Notepad app on a Windows 10 PC, but Microsoft’s available listing and release notes do not confirm that it supports Windows 10 generally. Check the Microsoft Store listing on the computer you want to use. If you only need basic Notepad and it is missing, Windows 10 may let you restore its classic built-in version through Optional Features.

Check whether the current Notepad app is available on your Windows 10 PC

The most reliable way to check eligibility is on the target PC itself. Microsoft describes Windows Notepad as a free download in the Store, but its listing does not state the Windows versions it supports. The current release notes cover Insider releases, not Windows 10 compatibility. That means neither source confirms a universal installation route for Windows 10.

  1. Open Start, type Microsoft Store, and open the app. Microsoft documents this way to open the Store: Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Search the Store for Windows Notepad and open its listing.
  3. Check whether the listing offers installation on that device. If it does, follow the Store prompts. Microsoft recommends getting apps from the Store: Microsoft’s app-sourcing guidance.

If the Store does not offer installation, the available evidence does not establish that a workaround will install the current app on your Windows 10 build. Avoid treating an unofficial package download as an equivalent or Microsoft-supported method.

Microsoft’s Insider release notes list Notepad version 11.2606.15.0 as rolling out to selected Insider channels on July 24, 2026. That is an Insider rollout detail, not confirmation that the version installs on Windows 10: Windows Insider release notes.

Restore classic Notepad if it is missing

Windows 10’s classic Notepad is separate from the newer Store-delivered app. If your goal is basic text editing and Notepad has disappeared, look for it under Optional Features. The route is described in a historical Microsoft-hosted Q&A thread, rather than current Notepad 11-specific documentation, so the labels may differ by Windows version.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Apps and then Optional Features. Depending on your Windows version, the wording or location may vary.
  3. Select Add a feature, search for Notepad, and install it if it is listed.

This may restore classic Notepad; it does not establish that the current Store app has been installed. The 2020 Q&A discussion also mentioned testing the Store app on Insider builds at that time, but that historical statement is not current compatibility guidance: Microsoft Q&A discussion.

Optional command-line recovery for the Notepad capability

A Microsoft Q&A community response from June 2022 suggested using DISM to add the Notepad capability. This is community-reported recovery guidance, not a confirmed method for installing the current Notepad app.

  1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
  2. Run:
    dism /online /add-Capability /CapabilityName:Microsoft.Windows.NotePad~~~~0.0.1.0
  3. Wait for DISM to finish, then check whether Notepad is available.

The command targets the Windows Notepad capability. Do not assume that it installs Notepad 11 or changes whether the Store listing considers your PC eligible: Microsoft Q&A community answer.

What the compatibility evidence does—and does not—say

A Microsoft Q&A thread from 2020 reported a Store listing threshold of Windows 10 version 19541.0 or higher. That was historical listing information, not a current promise of compatibility. Microsoft’s Store listing and Insider release notes do not currently establish a supported Windows 10 version for the latest app, so check the live listing on your device rather than relying on the old threshold.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date, although Windows 10 PCs may continue to work. This support change does not determine whether the Notepad app will install: Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
