In new Outlook or Outlook on the web, go to People, select the contact, choose Edit contact, update the details, and select Save. In classic Outlook for Windows, open People, double-click the contact, make your changes, and choose Save & Close.
Edit a contact in new Outlook or Outlook on the web
- Open People from the navigation pane.
- Select the contact you want to change.
- Choose Edit contact.
- Update the details, then choose Save.
These steps apply to new Outlook and Outlook on the web; the specific fields and controls can vary by client and account. See Microsoft’s contact instructions for Outlook.
If you selected a contact list rather than an individual, edit the list from People. A contact’s saved details and its membership in a list are separate.
Edit a contact in classic Outlook for Windows
- Select People on the navigation bar.
- Double-click the contact.
- Add or change the information.
- Select Save & Close.
Microsoft says changes made through this classic desktop workflow appear only on your computer. Do not assume this specific method updates the contact across all accounts or devices. See Microsoft’s classic Outlook contact instructions.

Why some contact details cannot be edited
First check whether you are editing your own saved contact or viewing a person’s organization directory profile. Microsoft notes that some information is supplied by an organization and cannot be changed in Outlook. You may be able to add personal notes or other details to a saved contact, while directory-supplied fields remain controlled by the organization and may take precedence on the displayed profile card.
If a directory field has no edit control, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator or directory owner to correct the source record. Microsoft explains the organization-managed information limitation in its Outlook on the web contact guidance.

Fix a wrong address suggested in the To box
If an incorrect address still appears in the To, Cc, or Bcc field after you edit a contact, the suggestion may come from Outlook’s Auto-Complete list of previously used recipients. That list is separate from the saved contact, so changing the contact alone may not remove the suggestion. Manage the suggested recipient separately using Microsoft’s instructions for editing a contact and managing recipient suggestions.

Visibility and syncing depend on the account and the source of the contact. Microsoft says contacts associated with a Microsoft account can be reflected in other places where you sign in with that account. People may also show contacts from mobile devices, Google, iCloud, and Skype synced through Microsoft Teams. This does not guarantee that every edit will immediately propagate to every connected service. See Microsoft’s overview of account data and choices.
