To change how your voice sounds in a supported iPhone app, start the call or recording, open Control Center, tap that app’s controls, then choose a Mic Mode under Audio & Video. To let an app use the microphone, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. To use a connected microphone, select it under Audio Input in the active app’s Control Center controls when that option is available.

These are separate controls: Mic Mode changes audio processing, Privacy settings grant app access, and Audio Input selects the microphone hardware.

Change an iPhone Mic Mode

  1. Open the calling or recording app and start the call or recording. Some supported apps let you set a mode before starting.
  2. Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center.
  3. Tap the active app’s controls, often labeled with the app name followed by “Controls.”
  4. Under Audio & Video, tap a Mic Mode and choose the one you want.

The mode applies only to the app you are using and stays selected for that app until you change it. It is not a single iPhone-wide microphone switch. Apple’s Mic Mode guide describes the available modes and requirements.

Choose a mode for the sound you want

  • Automatic: Selects a mode suited to the activity. Apple gives the example of Voice Isolation for a call using the receiver and Standard for a speakerphone call.
  • Standard: Uses standard voice processing.
  • Voice Isolation: Prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient noise. Choose it when the person listening should hear your speech more clearly than nearby sounds.
  • Wide Spectrum: Leaves surrounding sound unfiltered. Choose it when other people, music, or the environment should also be heard.

These modes serve different purposes rather than ranking audio quality. Wide Spectrum is not available for ordinary phone calls, and other availability depends on the app, iPhone, and iOS version.

Check whether your iPhone and app support the mode

Apple’s support requirements vary by activity. Its guidance, published November 7, 2025, lists iPhone XR, iPhone XS models, and later as supporting Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum, subject to the requirements below.

Feature and activity Apple’s stated iOS requirement
Voice Isolation or Wide Spectrum in FaceTime audio/video and certain third-party apps iOS 15 or later
Voice Isolation for phone calls iOS 16.4 or later
Automatic Mic Mode iOS 18 or later
Voice Isolation in audio/video recording apps, including Voice Memos and certain third-party apps iOS 26 or later

These are Apple’s published requirements, not a guarantee that every app offers every mode. If a control or mode is missing, update iOS if possible and check whether the app supports it. Wide Spectrum is not available for phone calls.

Change the microphone input or adjust input gain

If more than one audio device is connected, open Control Center during a call or recording, tap the active app’s controls, then choose the device listed beside Audio Input, if available. This selects the source hardware; it does not change Mic Mode. Apple’s audio and video call guide also describes selecting an input source from Control Center.

On iOS 26.1 and iPadOS 26.1, Apple says supported connected wired microphones and devices can also have an input-gain slider. Apple gives EarPods with USB-C as an example. Gain adjusts the input level and is distinct from Voice Isolation or Wide Spectrum processing; it appears only with supported hardware and apps. Check that your iPhone’s connector and the app support the device before relying on this control.
