If you want visitors to visit your X profile, use WordPress’s Social Icons block instead. Neither of those page-sharing options reposts an existing X post; that is a separate action.
Choose the button that matches what you want visitors to do
| Visitor action | Use | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Share the current WordPress page on X | X’s post button or a sharing block that lists X as a destination | Starts a post containing the page URL. The visitor can edit the post before publishing it. X’s instructions describe this as sharing the webpage with followers. |
| Visit your X profile | WordPress Social Icons block | Opens the profile URL you provide. It does not share the page the visitor is viewing. WordPress documentation describes the block as linking to social profiles or sites. |
| Repost an existing X post | Not covered by the page-sharing options in this guide | A page-share button shares a WordPress page link; it should not be described as a repost button. The cited X and WordPress instructions do not establish how to add an existing-post repost control. |
Option 1: Add a WordPress social-sharing block
A sharing block is the editor-based route. Before installing anything, check that the block explicitly offers X and shares the current page when clicked. A block that only displays an X icon or links to a profile does not meet that requirement.
Social Sharing Block
- In your WordPress dashboard, open Plugins → Add New, search for “Social Sharing Block,” and install and activate it. The plugin listing also describes inserting its blocks through the Gutenberg block inserter. See its WordPress.org listing.
- Open the post, page, or template where you want the control to appear, then use the block inserter to add the plugin’s sharing block.
- Configure the block’s available appearance and placement settings, and confirm that X is included as a destination.
- Preview the page and click the control to check that it prepares a post with the page URL. The visitor should be able to review or edit the post before publishing.
The plugin listing says it has no front-end JavaScript files; that is the publisher’s listing claim, not an independent performance or privacy test. At the time the listing was accessed in 2026, it showed version 1.4.0, 7,000+ active installations, a minimum WordPress version of 6.6, and testing through WordPress 7.1.3. These directory details can change, and an installation count is not a quality assessment, so check the current listing and your site’s compatibility before choosing it.
Simple X Buttons
Simple X Buttons’ WordPress.org listing describes four Gutenberg blocks: share, follow, mention, and hashtag. It also lists automatic placement, shortcodes, and theme template tags as placement options. The publisher says no API key is required and no external scripts load on page load. Treat those as publisher claims rather than independent tests, and check the current listing for maintenance and compatibility information before installing.

Option 2: Add X’s generated post button
X’s official post button prepares a post that includes the webpage link. Visitors can customize the suggested text before posting. X’s Help Center says: “The post button allows you to quickly share the webpage you’re viewing with all of your followers.”
- Go to publish.x.com and choose the post-button option.
- Customize the pre-populated post text and any suggested account options available in the tool.
- Copy the code generated by X.
- Add the code to the part of your WordPress site where you want the button to appear, using an editor or code-insertion method that accepts the supplied HTML.
- Preview the result and test the button. Confirm that it opens a post containing the intended page link.
X’s instructions say: “Copy and paste the code into the HTML of your website wherever you would like the button to appear.” That is general website guidance, not a WordPress-specific placement path. WordPress setups differ, so the exact place to add HTML depends on the editor, theme, and tools available on your site. Do not assume every theme has the same menu or edit theme files without understanding how your setup handles code.

X’s instructions also describe an optional counter as a sum of posts and reposts of the content. The counter is a count; it does not make the button a control for reposting an existing X post.

If your goal is to help visitors follow or visit your account, use WordPress’s core Social Icons block. WordPress documents both an X icon and a Twitter icon. The icon links to the profile or site URL you enter; it does not share the current WordPress page.

- Open the post, page, or site template where you want the profile link.
- Insert the Social Icons block from the block inserter.
- Add the X icon and enter your profile URL.
- Save and preview the page to verify that the icon opens the intended profile.
WordPress documents adding the block to a post, page, or site-wide template or pattern through the Site Editor. The exact editing location depends on whether you are working on one piece of content or a site-wide layout. Read the Social Icons block documentation.

What to check before choosing a plugin
- Action: Does it share the current page to X, link to a profile, or provide another action? Confirm the specific feature you need.
- Placement: Check whether the available block, automatic placement, shortcode, or template method works with the part of your site you want to change.
- Compatibility and maintenance: Review the plugin’s current WordPress requirements, tested version, and update information on its listing.
- Third-party scripts: If script loading matters to your site, distinguish publisher statements from independent testing. The listings cited here do not establish comparative speed, accessibility, privacy, or security performance.
