On most DISH receivers, press the remote’s red color button or press Options twice, then select Closed Captioning to switch captions on or off. The shortcut depends on your remote. If it is unavailable, use the receiver’s settings menu. Older ViP receivers and DISH Anywhere have different controls.

Turn captions on or off on Hopper, Wally, or Joey

  1. While watching TV, press the remote’s red color button or press Options twice. Which shortcut works depends on the remote.
  2. Select Closed Captioning to enable or disable captions.

If neither shortcut is available, open the settings menu instead. DISH says closed captioning is available on all DISH receivers; available accessibility options can vary by receiver model. Its accessibility settings page describes closed captioning as on-screen text of a program’s audio.

Adjust caption preferences on Hopper, Wally, or Joey

  1. Press Menu once or Home twice, depending on your remote.
  2. Select Settings, then Closed Captioning.
  3. Choose the caption preferences you want.

Use the caption menu on an older ViP receiver

  1. Press Menu.
  2. Select Preferences, then Closed Caption.
  3. Select Caption On/Off, choose your preference, and select Done.

Turn captions on or off in DISH Anywhere

DISH Anywhere captions are controlled in the video player, separately from your receiver’s accessibility settings.

  • On mobile: Tap the playing video to show the controls, then tap the CC icon. Tap it again to turn captions off.
  • On a TV: Press the down button to show playback options, highlight CC, and select it.

Why the remote shortcut may differ

DISH remote layouts and receiver models vary, so a red-button or double-Options shortcut may not be available on every setup. Use the relevant settings path above as the fallback. DISH notes that the 54-Series remote has customizable buttons that can be assigned to turn captions on or off; check compatibility for your receiver before considering a replacement remote. A replacement is not required to use the receiver menus or DISH Anywhere’s playback controls.
