You can control a supported iPhone with your eyes using Eye Tracking, an accessibility feature introduced in iOS 18. Turn it on at Settings > Accessibility > Eye Tracking, follow the on-screen calibration dots, then look steadily at an item to select it. Apple’s FY25 accessibility material lists iPhone 12 and later and iPhone SE (3rd generation); iOS 18 compatibility alone does not mean a phone supports Eye Tracking.

Which iPhones support Eye Tracking?

Apple’s FY25 accessibility material lists Eye Tracking for iPhone 12 and later and iPhone SE (3rd generation). That is a device-support list in Apple’s 2025 material, not a guarantee for every iPhone that can install iOS 18. Apple’s iOS 18 announcement says the operating system supports iPhone XS and later, but the OS compatibility floor is not the Eye Tracking compatibility floor.

Apple’s current iPhone guide describes the feature as available on supported iPhone models without publishing a model list. Check Settings > Accessibility on your device for the Eye Tracking option. If it is not there, iOS 18 compatibility by itself cannot establish that the model supports the feature. Apple’s FY25 accessibility material and its iOS 18 announcement provide the distinct device and operating-system ranges.

What Eye Tracking does

Eye Tracking uses the iPhone’s front-facing camera to follow where you look. The interface indicates the item under your gaze; holding your gaze steady activates a dwell action, with tap as the default. Apple says it works across iOS apps and does not require additional hardware or accessories. It is an accessibility control feature, not a separate eye-tracking device or app. Apple’s Eye Tracking announcement describes its app support and hardware requirements.

How to turn on and calibrate Eye Tracking

  1. Position the iPhone. Set it on a stable surface with the front camera able to see your face. Apple recommends adequate lighting on your face and a phone-to-face distance of about 18 inches (roughly 45 cm).
  2. Open the setting. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Eye Tracking, then turn on Eye Tracking.
  3. Complete calibration. Follow the on-screen dots with your eyes. Apple requires calibration each time Eye Tracking is turned on.
  4. Select an item. Look at an onscreen control. With the default behavior, the item under your gaze is outlined. Hold your gaze steady until the dwell timer completes; the default action is a tap.

Apple’s setup recommendations are starting conditions, not a promise of the same tracking performance in every room or for every user. For the full current instructions, see Apple’s iPhone guide to controlling iPhone with eye movement.

How to select items and use other actions

Eye Tracking uses dwell: keep your gaze steady on a control until the timer finishes to trigger the selected action. If Snap to Item is on, the pointer moves to the screen item nearest your gaze. If it is off, the dwell pointer appears at the gaze point instead. The default dwell action is a tap.

  • Smoothing: Increase it for smoother pointer movement; decrease it for a more responsive pointer.
  • Snap to Item: Automatically moves the pointer to the screen item nearest your gaze. Turning it off allows dwell at the gaze point rather than snapping to a nearby item.
  • Zoom on Keyboard Keys: Enlarges the keyboard area you are looking at; dwell on a key again to tap it.
  • Auto-Hide: Controls when the pointer appears after your gaze stays steady and fades while your eyes move.
  • Dwell Control: Turns dwell actions on or off and provides settings such as the default action and timer duration.
  • Show Face Guidance: Provides help with adjusting your position.

To change the pointer’s appearance, go to Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control and adjust its size or color. Apple documents these settings but does not publish measured speed or accuracy comparisons for different smoothing, snapping, or dwell-duration choices. Choose based on what feels easiest to control.

Recalibrating and improving the camera view

If your face or the phone changes position, Eye Tracking may prompt automatic recalibration when needed. You can also initiate recalibration by holding your gaze in the top-left corner until the dwell timer completes. To change the corner used for this, open the Dwell Control settings.

If tracking is difficult, first make sure the front camera has a clear view of your face, improve face lighting, and stabilize the phone near Apple’s recommended distance. A stand can be a convenient way to keep the phone steady, but it is optional; Eye Tracking does not require a stand, ring light, external eye tracker, or other accessory.

Privacy and hardware requirements

Apple says the front-facing camera is used and that “All data used to set up and control Eye Tracking is processed on device.” That statement applies to setup and control data; it should not be read as a broader claim about every app or all camera data. Apple says no additional hardware or accessories are required. Apple’s current guide covers the camera, setup, and data processing, while its 2024 announcement states that no extra hardware is needed.
