For an online install on a supported Windows client, deploy PowerShell’s Install-Language cmdlet as an Intune Windows platform script. Assign it to a device group, use system context when machine-level administrative rights are needed, and select the 64-bit PowerShell host for 64-bit clients. Pilot first: Intune platform scripts have a 30-minute timeout, and language downloads are not guaranteed to finish within it.

Install a language on an online Windows client

Microsoft’s Install-Language cmdlet, in the LanguagePackManagement module, downloads and installs available language components. The cmdlet requires administrative execution. For example, the following installs Spanish (Spain); it is an example, not a guarantee that the language or every component is available on every Windows build. See Microsoft’s Install-Language reference and confirm the language tag and client support before deployment.

Install-Language -Language es-ES

Choose whether to copy language settings

Installing language resources is distinct from choosing the display language, regional formats, keyboard or input method, and optional capabilities such as speech, handwriting, OCR, or text-to-speech. Microsoft documents -CopyToSettings as an option that applies system and default-device settings after installation. Use it only when that settings change is intended; check and configure any remaining user-facing preferences separately. The cmdlet also offers -ExcludeFeatures, but excluding associated features may omit capabilities users need.

Deploy the script through Intune

  1. In the Intune admin center, add a Windows platform PowerShell script, upload the script file, and assign it to the intended device group. See Microsoft’s PowerShell scripts for Windows devices in Intune guidance.
  2. Configure the script to run in system context if it needs machine-level administrative rights. Install-Language requires administrative execution.
  3. For 64-bit Windows clients, select the 64-bit PowerShell host if that is the intended execution environment. Check this setting on existing script policies as well as new ones.
  4. Pilot on representative devices and networks before broad assignment. Intune documents a 30-minute platform-script timeout; test whether the download and installation complete within that limit in your environment.
  5. Monitor script status in Intune. Microsoft says failed scripts are retried for the next three consecutive Intune Management Extension check-ins; this is retry behavior, not a guarantee that language downloads will complete. If a script does not run as expected, check its device status and logs, along with enrollment and management-extension behavior.

Verify the result and the user experience

Check that the requested language is installed and that the intended capabilities and settings are present. Do not assume that installing language resources alone changes a user’s display language, regional formats, or input method. Microsoft’s cmdlet documentation covers installation and settings options; choose and verify the user-facing configuration separately.

When to use DISM instead

Use DISM and Windows language or Features on Demand (FOD) package sources when servicing an image, controlling package sources, or incorporating language components into a broader deployment. This is a different path from running an online client install through Intune. Microsoft’s Windows 11 language-pack imaging guidance describes adding language packs and the associated capabilities. Available components differ by language; a Language Interface Pack (LIP) may also depend on a base language.

For Features on Demand, Microsoft recommends Add-Capability and says a preinstalled FOD source repository should match the Windows image version. For example, this adds one Basic capability online; it is not a complete language-pack recipe:

  • Combo headphone/microphone jack - Noble Wedge Lock slot - HDMI; 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1
  • Windows 11 Pro
Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name 'Language.Basic~~~es-ES~0.0.1.0'

Select the capabilities appropriate to the language and user need rather than assuming one fixed list. Depending on language availability and the scenario, these can include Basic, Fonts, OCR, Text-to-speech, Speech, and Handwriting. Microsoft documents Features on Demand capabilities and the Add-WindowsCapability cmdlet for online and offline images. Review Windows Update, WSUS, and source policy for the deployment design, since WSUS has limitations for hosting client FODs and language packs.

Choose the approach that matches the target

Approach Best fit Key considerations
Install-Language through an Intune platform script An online, running Windows client Requires administrative execution; plan for language download and the Intune script timeout. Use when the client can obtain its language components through the configured servicing path.
DISM with language and FOD sources Image servicing, offline images, or deployments that need package-source control Choose language-specific capabilities and a source appropriate to the image. Match the FOD repository to the Windows image version and account for Windows Update or WSUS policy.

Microsoft also documents a specialized PowerShell procedure for Windows 11 Enterprise Azure Virtual Desktop VMs. Treat it as specific to that environment, not as a general replacement for the client-script or image-servicing methods above: Add language packs to Windows 11 Enterprise VMs in Azure Virtual Desktop.
