You can record a show directly on a smart TV only if that exact TV model and regional version has a built-in PVR, USB Recording, or similar feature. If it does, connect compatible USB storage, let the TV prepare it if prompted, then choose a live program or schedule it in the TV Guide. This usually records eligible broadcast channels coming into the TV’s own tuner—not video from a set-top box connected by HDMI. If the TV lacks a recorder, use the cable or satellite box’s DVR, or a live-TV service’s cloud DVR.
First, check what you want to record and where it comes from
The signal route determines which recording option can work. TV-native recording is generally for digital channels received by the television’s own tuner over an antenna, cable, or satellite connection. If you watch through a receiver connected to HDMI, the TV usually cannot record that external input; check the receiver for a DVR instead. A USB port alone does not mean the TV can record.
| What you watch | Recording option to check | Where the recording or pause is kept |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcast channel received by the TV’s built-in tuner | TV’s PVR, USB Recording, Time Machine, or equivalent, if supported | Compatible USB storage; playback may be limited to the TV that made the recording |
| Channel delivered through a cable or satellite box connected to the TV | DVR feature on the box or receiver | As specified by the provider or device |
| Live channel watched in a streaming app | Cloud DVR offered by the streaming provider or channel | Provider’s cloud, subject to plan and program rights |
| Live TV you only need to pause briefly | Live TV Pause or a channel’s rewind/start-over function, if available | Temporary buffer; not necessarily a saved recording |
Features vary by TV model, model year, and country. Samsung advises checking the exact model specifications because PVR cannot be added later. Its Germany support page, updated June 23, 2026, says the signal must come directly through the TV’s built-in tuner: Samsung Germany: PVR function on a TV. Samsung Australia likewise limits recording to supported models and digital broadcast channels received by the TV; its instructions exclude external-device video and Samsung TV Plus: Samsung Australia: recording programs on a Samsung TV.
How to record with the TV’s built-in USB/PVR feature
- Find the full model number. Look in the TV’s settings, on its label, or in its documentation. Search the manufacturer’s local specifications or manual for “PVR,” “USB Recording,” “Time Machine,” or “Timeshift.” Confirm the feature is supported in your region and for your model year.
- Connect the broadcast signal to the TV’s tuner. Tune the digital channels you want to record. If the picture comes from a separate HDMI receiver, use that receiver’s recording feature instead unless the TV manual explicitly says otherwise.
- Connect compatible USB storage. Use the type and capacity specified for your model, then follow the TV’s on-screen setup. The TV may test or format the drive. Formatting deletes existing files, so back up the drive first. Do not assume a flash drive will work simply because it fits a USB port.
- Choose a current or upcoming program. Open Live TV and the TV Guide, Electronic Program Guide (EPG), or recording menu. Select the current listing to start recording, or select a future listing to schedule it. Some models offer series recording or Timeshift; availability and controls differ.
- Verify the recording. Check the recordings list and play a short test before relying on a future schedule. Keep enough storage free and follow the manual’s instructions on whether the TV must remain on, whether you can change channels, and how to stop a recording.
Brand-specific examples and limits
- Samsung: Supported TVs can record current or future programs to USB storage. Samsung’s Germany instructions describe starting a recording or scheduling from the EPG/TV Guide, with series recording on some supported sets. Samsung Australia says formatting erases the storage device and that only eligible digital channels received by the TV can be recorded.
- LG: LG’s US instructions cover Time Machine on supported models and digital channels through the antenna input. The page, dated May 12, 2026, lists USB storage of at least 4 GB with 1 GB free; those are LG’s stated requirements, not universal smart-TV requirements. LG says the feature is supported only on models released in 2021 or earlier, with some 2021 models excluded. For the covered 2021 webOS instructions, start a recording from More Actions while watching a digital channel, or schedule through Schedule List or the Broadcast Guide. Check the exact model manual: LG: how to record a TV program.
- Philips: Philips describes SMART USB Record on applicable models for scheduled digital-TV recording through IP-EPG and simultaneous viewing and recording. It recommends a USB hard drive for video storage and says recordings can be played only on the TV that made them. The cited page gives examples of specific older models, so do not assume the feature is available on a current Philips TV: Philips Singapore: recording TV programs.
What to do if the TV cannot record
Use the DVR in a cable or satellite receiver
If you watch through a set-top box, look in the box’s guide or recording menu, or check its manual and your provider’s instructions. A TV’s USB recorder generally does not capture HDMI input, so connecting a drive to the TV is not a substitute for a DVR on the receiver.

Check whether your live-TV service includes cloud DVR
Cloud DVR is a service feature, separate from USB recording on the TV. Roku’s support page describes eligible Roku subscription cloud DVR and third-party channel DVR options, naming Sling TV, Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, fuboTV, and Philo as examples. Roku says these recordings are stored in the cloud, not on the Roku device. Availability, recording limits, retention, channels, and program eligibility depend on the current provider and plan. The cited Roku feature records live programs, not on-demand titles, and provider rights can prevent some live programs from being recorded. Confirm the current offer and the specific show with the service: Roku Support: how to record movies and TV shows using cloud DVR.

Pause features may keep only a temporary buffer. Roku’s over-the-air Live TV Pause requires a Roku TV, an antenna or cable connection without a set-top box, and a USB 2.0 flash drive with at least 16 GB. Roku says this feature can pause for up to 90 minutes; changing channels, leaving Live TV, or turning off the TV loses the paused position. It does not save or transfer recordings. Roku also describes a 30-minute rolling buffer for some live streaming channels and eligible premium subscriptions, but rewind range and Start Over depend on the channel and provider rights. These are playback controls, not a general-purpose DVR. Details: Roku Support: pause live TV on your Roku TV.

Before relying on a scheduled recording
- Confirm the feature applies to the exact TV model and country, not merely the brand or presence of a USB port.
- Confirm the channel arrives through the TV tuner if using the TV’s own recorder.
- Back up files before accepting a prompt to format USB storage; formatting erases its contents.
- Check the TV or service’s instructions for storage limits, recording schedules, channel changes, playback restrictions, and whether the TV must stay on.
- Make a short test recording and play it back before depending on a one-time or series schedule.
