If your integrated webcam is not working, check its physical shutter or keyboard switch first, then test it in the Windows Camera app. That quick test helps identify whether the issue affects Windows generally or only one app. Next, check camera permissions, Device Manager, and drivers—in that order—before contacting your laptop manufacturer about a possible hardware fault.
1. Check the laptop’s physical camera controls
Look for a sliding privacy shutter around the camera lens, a physical camera switch, or a keyboard key marked with a camera icon. Some laptops require pressing the camera key with Fn. Make sure the shutter is open and the camera switch is enabled before changing Windows settings.
2. Check Windows camera permissions
Windows permissions can block camera access even when the camera is detected. Open the camera settings for your version of Windows:
- Windows 11: Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
- Windows 10: Settings > Privacy > Camera.
Turn on camera access for the device and allow access for the app you want to use. Browsers and many video-call programs are desktop apps, so also enable the setting that allows desktop apps to access the camera. If a control is unavailable or greyed out, an administrator may have restricted it.

On a work- or school-managed laptop, ask your IT administrator about a policy restriction rather than trying to override it. Microsoft identifies error 0xA00F4292 as a clue that camera access may be restricted by policy; it is not proof of the cause. See Microsoft’s guide to camera app permissions.
3. Test the camera in the Windows Camera app
Open the built-in Camera app and check whether it shows a live preview.

- If Windows displays error 0xA00F4244 (“NoCamerasAreAttached”), it means Windows cannot detect the camera. The code is a diagnostic clue; it does not establish whether the cause is a driver, connection, or hardware problem.
Microsoft’s 0xA00F4244 troubleshooting page explains the detection error and related driver steps.
5. Update or restore the camera driver
Install available Windows updates and optional driver updates, then restart the laptop. If the camera stopped working immediately after a driver or Windows update, try restoring the previous driver before removing the device.

- In Device Manager, expand the category containing the camera and right-click the camera device.
- Select Properties > Driver. If Roll Back Driver is available, use it when the problem began after an update, then restart.
- If rollback is unavailable or does not help, right-click the camera and select Uninstall device. Restart the laptop, or use Action > Scan for hardware changes, so Windows can try to reinstall it.
For a compatible USB camera, Microsoft documents using the in-box USB Video Device driver. This is not the first step for a built-in webcam, and a generic driver can remove camera-specific functions, including support for some Windows Hello features. For a built-in camera that remains broken, use the laptop manufacturer’s model-specific driver and support guidance. Microsoft’s driver troubleshooting instructions include these recovery options.

- 0xA00F4244: Windows cannot detect the camera; check Device Manager and drivers.
- 0xA00F4243 and related variants: another app or process may be using the camera; close other camera apps and retry.
- 0x80070005: Access is denied; review device, app, and desktop-app permissions.
- 0xA00F4292: Camera access may be restricted by policy; on a managed device, contact the administrator.
Microsoft lists these codes in its camera troubleshooting documentation.
7. When to contact the manufacturer
If the camera remains absent from Device Manager after a hardware scan and Windows driver recovery, consult the laptop manufacturer for the correct driver and model-specific support. Software troubleshooting cannot repair a failed internal camera or its connection.
If you need video calls before the built-in camera is repaired, a separate USB webcam can be a temporary workaround, not a fix for the integrated camera. Check that it is compatible with your laptop and that you have an available, suitable port.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. This support change does not, by itself, explain a webcam failure. The camera troubleshooting steps and settings differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11.
