To use GitHub Copilot with PowerShell, set up Copilot in a supported IDE, open your script, and start with a small question or change grounded in the code you are working on. Review every suggestion, then check and test it in the PowerShell environment where the script will run. Copilot can assist with explanations, code, fixes, refactoring, and tests; its output is not automatically verified.

What you need before you start

GitHub’s IDE quickstart lists three prerequisites: an active Copilot plan, the Copilot extension for your chosen IDE, and signing in to GitHub from that IDE. The documented IDEs include Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Eclipse, and Xcode. Check the current GitHub Copilot IDE quickstart for the instructions that apply to your editor.

This is an IDE workflow, not a PowerShell-specific setup guide. The cited GitHub documentation does not establish which PowerShell extension to install, supported PowerShell versions, or execution-policy settings. Follow the current documentation for your editor and PowerShell environment for those details; do not change execution policy just because a generated script suggests it.

Use Copilot on a PowerShell script

  1. Open or create a script. Use a PowerShell file in the IDE where you have installed the Copilot extension and signed in.
  2. Start in Ask mode. Open Copilot Chat and ask a question about the current file or select the relevant lines first. GitHub says Copilot can use the open file and selected code as context. For example, ask, “What does this function do?” or “Explain this line.”
  3. Give it a bounded task. Say what code to work on, what outcome you expect, and what must remain unchanged. Include relevant inputs, outputs, error cases, and the PowerShell version or environment when you know them. For instance: “Explain what this function does, then suggest a change that handles an empty input. Do not change behavior outside this function; identify assumptions and give me a test plan.”
  4. Ask for one next step. Once you understand the existing code, request a specific change, such as adding error handling to the function, or ask for a test plan or test cases. GitHub documents code generation, fixes, refactoring, and test generation as IDE workflows.
  5. Inspect and test the result. Review the proposed code or diff, check it in the intended PowerShell environment, and run appropriate tests yourself before relying on it.

How to give Copilot useful context

A prompt is more useful when Copilot can see the code involved and when the requested change has clear boundaries. GitHub recommends using relevant open or highlighted code and project context, including file references or workspace context where available. Avoid asking it to change an entire project when you only need one function updated.

A practical prompt can specify:

  • Scope: the function, selected lines, or files to consider.
  • Behavior: expected inputs and outputs, including empty or invalid inputs.
  • Constraints: what existing behavior must not change.
  • Environment: the PowerShell version and operating context, if known.
  • Review help: assumptions to identify and tests to suggest.

These details are prompting advice, not a guarantee that Copilot has correctly inferred your environment. Verify assumptions and behavior rather than treating generated code as tested.

Ask mode or Agent mode?

Choose based on how much work you want Copilot to take on. GitHub documents Ask mode for questions, explanations, and suggestions; Agent mode can handle a multi-step task by selecting files, editing them, and proposing or running commands. Availability varies by IDE and may be disabled by an organization’s policy.

Mode Best suited to What to review
Ask Questions about a script, explanations, and focused code suggestions Check the suggested code and any assumptions before using it.
Agent Multi-step work that may involve choosing files and making changes across them Review every changed file and each proposed terminal command. Keep command approval enabled where available.

Agent mode offers more autonomy and therefore calls for closer review. GitHub’s documentation describes agent workflows in which Copilot may offer terminal commands, and settings or administrator controls can allow some commands to run automatically. Approve commands deliberately, and do not assume a command is safe or appropriate just because Copilot proposed it.

Reuse a recurring request with a prompt file

If you repeatedly give Copilot the same instructions, GitHub’s prompt-file tutorial describes reusable .prompt.md files stored in .github/prompts and invoked from Copilot Chat with a slash command. The cited tutorial marks prompt files as public preview and lists Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, and JetBrains IDEs as supported. Check the current tutorial for availability in your editor before depending on this feature: GitHub’s prompt-file tutorial.

Can you use Copilot from a terminal?

GitHub also documents Copilot CLI, including submitting a prompt with -p. That general CLI documentation does not establish PowerShell-specific setup or how command and shell behavior will work on your machine. Treat the terminal route as a separate setup to verify against current GitHub CLI documentation, rather than assuming the IDE steps apply.
