There is no single yes-or-no answer to whether Grok is safe: the risks and controls depend on whether you use the standalone Grok app or Grok.com, or access Grok through X. A June 2026 finding by Canada’s Privacy Commissioner concluded that X Corp. and xAI launched Grok’s image-generation tool without proper safeguards or sufficient consideration of privacy harms. For everyday users, the practical priorities are to avoid entering sensitive information, check the settings for the service you actually use, and verify Grok’s factual answers.
First, distinguish Grok on X from the standalone app
“Grok” can mean the standalone mobile app and Grok.com, or the AI features accessed through X. The distinction matters: SpaceXAI’s Privacy Policy covers the standalone app and Grok.com, while X describes its own data use and controls for Grok on X in its Help Center. SpaceXAI says its policy does not apply when the service is accessed through a third party.

These interfaces are not interchangeable: deleting a SpaceXAI account is not the same as deleting an X account, and a setting in one service should not be assumed to control the other.
What information might Grok use?
Prompts and conversations
Treat anything you type or upload as information you are disclosing to the service. SpaceXAI’s policy advises against including personal information in prompts and says it cannot control what users provide. X says Grok interactions, inputs, and results on X may be used for training and fine-tuning, subject to the available controls and the qualifications X describes.

Training and personalization on X
X documents separate controls for model training and personalization. Its training opt-out concerns use of public data and Grok interactions, inputs, and results to create and fine-tune AI models; X says opting out does not prevent continued use of Grok. X also says the control does not stop a deployed model from learning through ordinary feature use, and that submitting conversation feedback may still allow the conversation and related data to be used. The separate personalization control addresses personalization rather than the training opt-out.
X says making an account private prevents posts from being publicly visible and prevents those posts from being used to train xAI models or surfaced in answers. That setting concerns X posts; it is not a universal control over everything you provide to Grok.

How to limit sharing and remove conversation history
Turn off X’s Grok training and personalization controls
- In X, open Settings → Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Under Data Sharing, turn off the option allowing public data and Grok interactions, inputs, and results to be used for training and fine-tuning.
- In the same settings area, review and adjust Grok Personalization separately.
Labels and menu locations can change, so confirm the current controls in your account. These steps apply to Grok on X, not automatically to the standalone app or Grok.com.
Delete standalone conversations or account
For the standalone app and Grok.com, SpaceXAI’s Consumer FAQs describe deleting one conversation, deleting all conversations, and deleting an account through app or web settings. The FAQ also points users to a privacy portal for access, download, or deletion requests.

Delete conversations on X
For Grok on X, use the conversation-history deletion control described in X’s Grok help page. This is separate from the standalone service’s deletion controls.
Deletion is not necessarily immediate or absolute
SpaceXAI says it may take up to 30 days after a deletion request to delete information from its systems. It says deleted conversations and conversations made in Private Chat are removed within 30 days, except where they have been de-identified or pseudonymized and disassociated from the account, or must be retained for safety, security, or legal reasons. X gives a separate within-30-days period for deleted conversations on X, with security or legal exceptions.

These are stated deletion policies, not a guarantee that every copy or derived system is erased immediately. The services’ separate policies and exceptions matter when deciding what to share in the first place.

On June 11, 2026, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada reported that its investigation found X Corp. and xAI violated Canada’s federal private-sector privacy law, PIPEDA, in connection with launching Grok image generation without appropriate safeguards or sufficient consideration of privacy harms. The findings concluded that privacy loss and harm outweighed the companies’ benefits and found a contravention of subsection 5(3) of PIPEDA. The Commissioner said the tool enabled non-consensual sexualized deepfakes targeting women and children. This is a Canadian regulatory finding, not a global court judgment. The Commissioner’s report says xAI applied technical measures to the @Grok account on January 8, 2026, then applied prevention measures to Grok on X and the standalone service across users, including X Premium users, on January 14. The Commissioner considered the response insufficiently timely because more than ten days passed before measures were applied. The June release says the companies had introduced safeguards and proactive sweeps and committed to quarterly and independent third-party audit reporting until the issue is fully resolved; the Commissioner said it would monitor implementation. Those are reported measures and commitments, not proof that safeguards are permanently effective.
The UK investigation is a separate matter
On February 3, 2026, the UK Information Commissioner’s Office announced an investigation into whether personal data was processed lawfully, fairly, and transparently and whether safeguards against harmful manipulated images were adequate. Information Commissioner John Edwards said the reports raised “deeply troubling questions” about use of personal data to generate intimate or sexualised images without people’s knowledge or consent, and whether necessary safeguards were put in place. He also warned that losing control of personal data this way can cause immediate and significant harm, particularly for children. Grok’s answers can be wrong even when they sound certain
X warns that Grok may provide factually incorrect information confidently, missummarize, or miss context, and advises users to verify answers independently. Treat it as an assistant rather than an authority, especially for consequential decisions. A polished response is not evidence that its claims are accurate.
A practical way to use Grok more cautiously
- Do not enter passwords, financial details, private health information, confidential work material, or another person’s personal information into prompts.
- Identify whether you are using the standalone app/site or Grok on X, then review the controls for that service.
- Delete conversation history when appropriate, while accounting for the stated retention windows and exceptions.
- Check important factual claims against reliable sources rather than relying on Grok’s confidence or wording.
- Do not treat privacy settings or deletion as a remedy for risks created by image-generation features or as a guarantee that all data copies are immediately erased.
xAI’s Risk Management Framework, last updated August 20, 2025, says it focuses on malicious use and loss of control, and categorizes model behaviors as abuse potential, concerning propensities, and dual-use capabilities. It also acknowledges difficulty anticipating all public uses and interactions. This describes xAI’s stated approach; it is not independent validation of safeguard effectiveness.
