Wireless headphones receive audio over a short-range radio link—usually Bluetooth—not Wi-Fi. The source device encodes the audio for a compatible Bluetooth connection, sends it through the air, and the headphones decode it and use their speaker drivers to produce sound.
How do wireless headphones work?
The signal path has four main steps:
- The source supplies audio. A phone, computer, or other device provides the music, video, call, or other sound.
- The source encodes the audio. For Bluetooth streaming, the source uses a supported audio codec to represent the audio for transmission. A codec is not the radio connection itself.
- Bluetooth sends the data. The source transmits the encoded audio by radio to paired headphones. Bluetooth Classic, also called BR/EDR, is widely used for continuous audio streaming. It operates in the 2.4 GHz unlicensed ISM band and uses 79 channels, according to the Bluetooth SIG technology overview.
- The headphones turn it back into sound. Their electronics receive and decode the stream, then send an electrical signal to the drivers. The drivers move air, which is what you hear.
The wireless link transports encoded audio data; it does not guarantee that the headphones receive an uncompressed copy of the original file. The codec and its implementation affect how the audio is represented.
How do wireless headphones connect to a phone?
For Bluetooth headphones, pairing lets the phone and headphones find and identify one another. Once connected, they use an audio mode and codec that both devices support. Having a premium codec on only one device does not make it available: the devices need a mutually supported option, and the selected codec is not necessarily the highest one either device advertises. Sennheiser’s Bluetooth audio explanation describes codec negotiation and the differences between Bluetooth Classic and LE Audio.
Bluetooth is a radio technology, not Wi-Fi. Bluetooth Classic uses frequency hopping in the 2.4 GHz band, as described in the Bluetooth Core Specification 5.4 architecture. Other wireless activity, distance, and physical obstructions can still affect a connection, so no single range applies to every headphone and setting.

Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth LE Audio are different
Bluetooth Classic
Bluetooth Classic (BR/EDR) is the established Bluetooth radio used by many wireless audio products. The Bluetooth SIG describes it as supporting continuous wireless communication optimized for audio streaming. A Bluetooth version number alone does not tell you which audio features a specific pair of headphones supports.
Bluetooth LE Audio
Bluetooth LE Audio uses Bluetooth Low Energy radio and the LC3 codec. It is distinct from Bluetooth Classic audio and is not automatically backward compatible with it. Features such as broadcast audio depend on the capabilities and implementation of the specific devices. The Bluetooth SIG’s LE Audio FAQs say LC3 can support high audio quality at low data rates, but any power savings depend on implementation and use. That is not a guarantee that every LE Audio headphone will last longer.

Why can Bluetooth headphones have delay or dropouts?
Bluetooth audio may arrive slightly later than playback begins on the source. Sony’s headset manual identifies playback delay as a characteristic of Bluetooth wireless technology. The amount depends on the devices and use case; codec handling, processing, and buffering can all matter, so there is no universal latency figure for Bluetooth headphones.
Dropouts can occur when the signal is weakened or disrupted. Bluetooth frequency hopping is part of the radio design, but it cannot eliminate every source of local interference or physical blocking. If a connection is unreliable, try keeping the source nearby, reducing obstructions, and checking that both devices support the audio capabilities you expect.

How does noise cancellation work?
Passive isolation comes from the headphone’s fit and materials physically reducing sound that reaches your ears. Active noise cancellation (ANC) is an electronic feature: microphones and processing work with the headphone speakers to reduce some outside sound. ANC is separate from the Bluetooth connection, and it does not remove every sound equally.
Behavior varies by model. For the headset covered in Sony’s manual, cancellation primarily targets lower-frequency noise, and covering its microphones can affect operation. Those details should not be assumed to describe every headphone.

Why do wireless headphones need charging?
The radio, audio processing, and other electronics need power. Battery runtime varies by product and use: listening level, calls, ANC, connection conditions, and implementation can all affect it. The Bluetooth SIG does not give a universal battery-life figure for headphones, and its guidance on LC3 notes that power reductions depend on how a product is implemented and used.
Controls, microphones, multipoint connections, voice-assistant support, and gaming modes are also product-specific. A Bluetooth audio connection by itself does not promise any of those features. The Bluetooth SIG’s guidance on communicating supported functionality recommends describing only features a product actually supports.

What to check when choosing wireless headphones
- Fit and form: Choose between over-ear, on-ear, or earbuds based on comfort and how much physical isolation you want.
- Compatibility: Check which Bluetooth audio modes and codecs both your source and headphones support.
- Use case: For calls, gaming, or video, look for relevant information about microphone behavior and latency rather than assuming all models perform alike.
- Noise control: Check whether the product offers ANC and consider its fit for passive isolation; an ANC label does not guarantee identical results across products.
- Battery claims: Compare runtime figures only with their stated test conditions, including whether ANC or calls were in use.
- Extra features: Verify multipoint, app support, controls, and other functions in the product specifications.
