Connect the HP printer to Wi-Fi, put your Mac on the same network, then add the printer in System Settings > Printers & Scanners. If the printer supports AirPrint, you can usually print without installing a separate app or driver.
Before you start
- Turn on the HP printer, load paper, and clear any error displayed on its screen.
- Connect the printer and Mac to the same Wi-Fi network. This is the normal route for wireless printing.
- Have the printer’s model-specific setup instructions available. HP’s wireless controls and button sequences vary by model.
Connect the HP printer to Wi-Fi
Use the printer’s own wireless settings to join your home or office network. On HP models with a touchscreen, look for the Wireless Setup Wizard in the wireless or network settings. For models without a touchscreen, follow the instructions for that exact printer; some supported models use a wireless button or WPS.
WPS is available only when both the printer and router support a compatible setup method. Check the router and printer documentation rather than assuming that every model has a WPS button. Apple’s Connect an AirPrint printer to a Wi-Fi network guidance is general and not specific to every printer model.
Add the printer on your Mac
- Make sure the Mac is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the printer.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings, then select Printers & Scanners.
- Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
- Select the HP printer from the list of available printers and click Add.
Apple’s current instructions are in Add and manage printers on Mac. Labels and screens may differ on older macOS versions.

Print a document
- Open the document or image you want to print.
- Choose File > Print.
- Select the HP printer from the Printer menu, adjust any print settings you need, and click Print.
Choose the right setup method
AirPrint for basic wireless printing
Many popular printers support AirPrint, which lets you print wirelessly from a Mac without installing a separate app, driver, or other software. Support depends on the specific HP printer. Apple describes this general capability in its Mac printer guide; check your model’s specifications if it does not appear or if you need features beyond basic printing.
HP’s app for guided setup and extra features
HP’s printer app is an option for guided setup and additional functions, including printer support and scanning. It is not required for basic printing when the printer works with AirPrint.

USB-assisted Wi-Fi setup on some models
Some Wi-Fi printers may need a temporary USB connection to a Mac and a printer setup assistant to configure wireless access. Once setup is complete, Apple says the cable can be disconnected. This is model-dependent, not a universal requirement. Before using a cable, check the printer’s connector and whether it matches a port on your Mac.
Add by IP address as an advanced fallback
If the printer does not appear in the discovery list, macOS can add some network printers by IP address or host name. Open Printers & Scanners, choose Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax, then use the IP option and enter the printer’s network details. The printer must support a listed protocol such as AirPrint, IPP, LPD, or HP Jetdirect. You may need to select the protocol and provide the address; generic protocol choices can offer fewer features than the printer’s normal driver or AirPrint.

If the HP printer does not appear on the Mac
- Check the Wi-Fi connection. Confirm the printer has joined the network and the Mac is on that same network. Check the printer’s wireless status on its panel or print a network configuration page if the model offers one.
- Give the printer time to connect. After turning it on or changing its network settings, wait a minute or two for it to join Wi-Fi and become discoverable.
- Check for updates. Install available macOS updates, HP printer software updates, and printer firmware updates.
- Restart the devices. Restart the router, printer, and Mac, then try adding the printer again.
- Reset the Mac printing system only as a later step. HP documents this as a troubleshooting option, but resetting removes all printers and scanners from the Mac’s list. You will need to add them again afterward.
For model-specific wireless controls, consult the instructions for your exact HP printer. Apple’s AirPrint Wi-Fi guidance also notes that its general advice is not tailored to a particular printer.
