The best language-learning app depends on what you need to practice: Babbel offers structured lessons, Duolingo makes short daily practice easy to sustain, Busuu adds peer feedback, and Lingoda puts live classes with teachers at the center. Memrise and Drops emphasize vocabulary in different ways. None should be treated as a shortcut to fluency. If you need help communicating while traveling rather than a course, WIRED’s August 2023 guide also covered Pocketalk Plus and Timekettle WT2 Edge translator earbuds; those are translation tools, not language-learning apps.

How to choose a language-learning app

Start with the skill you want to build and the kind of practice you will actually use. Structured lessons can help organize study; gamified modules can make daily practice appealing; peer review and live classes create opportunities for feedback and conversation. Vocabulary drills can support recall, but they are not a substitute for grammar, speaking, or listening practice.

  • Choose structured self-study if you want lessons that explain grammar and introduce practical situations.
  • Choose gamified practice if short sessions and reminders help you build a routine.
  • Look for feedback or instruction if you need other people to respond to your speaking or writing.
  • Use vocabulary-focused tools as supplements when you also have a plan for grammar and communication practice.

The descriptions below reflect WIRED’s article, published August 1, 2023 and marked updated in August 2023. Its prices, language counts, subscription details, and product availability are historical rather than confirmed current information.

Best language-learning apps by learning style

Babbel: structured lessons

WIRED named Babbel its “Best Overall” pick, citing grammar explanations, pronunciation work, conversational scenarios, cultural notes, podcasts, and games. It also described optional live online classes. The trade-offs in that review were a limited free trial, some repetitive lessons, and occasional speech-recognition problems. Babbel is the most natural fit here if you want a course-like sequence rather than primarily a game or a flashcard tool.

Duolingo: gamified daily practice

WIRED highlighted Duolingo’s short topic modules, streaks, stories, puzzles, reminders, grammar tips, and large free tier. Its review also cautioned that speaking and listening practice are comparatively light and that using the app alone will not produce fluency. It can suit learners who need an accessible way to practice regularly, provided they supplement it with richer listening and conversation.

Memrise: vocabulary and casual conversation

Memrise combines spaced-repetition flashcards with grammar lessons, speech recognition, and short videos of native speakers, according to WIRED’s 2023 account. The review noted a free tier, but also repetitive drills, limited grammar explanation, and uneven user-generated content. It is a vocabulary-oriented option, not a complete replacement for instruction or interaction.

Busuu: structured lessons with peer review

WIRED described Busuu as combining chapters and short conversation videos with corrections from native speakers on learners’ written and spoken work. Feedback quality can vary, the review warned. Its report of 14 supported languages refers to the August 2023 article, not a current language count; check Busuu’s present language coverage and which feedback features are included in its plans.

Lingoda: live online classes

Lingoda’s format is distinct from self-paced apps: WIRED described hourlong online classes with experienced teachers, downloadable study material, small groups of up to five, or individual lessons. Classes were offered across time zones. The review identified expense and variation in instructor and classmate experience as drawbacks. It listed English, Business English, French, Spanish, and German at the time; confirm current course availability and pricing directly with Lingoda.

Drops: visual vocabulary drills

Drops uses picture-based vocabulary practice with spoken prompts, as described by WIRED. Its review reported 39 available languages in August 2023, a historical figure that should not be read as today’s catalog. WIRED considered it best used as a supplement because it does not provide grammar, speaking, or pronunciation practice.

Other formats WIRED mentioned

WIRED’s August 2023 honorable mentions covered several different approaches: Lingvist and DuoCards for flashcards; Immerse for virtual-reality lessons; Pimsleur for audio repetition; Fluent and Language Reactor as browser-based contextual supports; TV5MONDE for French practice; Mondly for gamified modules; Rosetta Stone for immersive lessons; and Lirica for learning through songs. These are descriptions from that article, not confirmation of current features, compatibility, language coverage, or availability. For example, the article said Immerse required Meta Quest 2; check the service’s current requirements before relying on that detail.

Do Language Learning Apps Work?

They can help beginners and intermediate learners build a foundation, but the WIRED article does not support a promise of fluency from app use alone. It says fluency typically calls for more practice and comprehension through human interaction, classes, books, or films. The article also notes that research into app efficacy has been limited and does not provide a comparable cross-app estimate of fluency gains or time to proficiency.

WIRED attributes three common limitations to a Columbia University review: “First, apps tend to teach vocabulary in isolated units rather than in relevant contexts; second, apps minimally adapt to suit the skill sets of individual learners; and third, apps rarely offer explanatory corrective feedback to learners.” In practical terms, a learner may recognize a word in a drill but still need context to use it naturally; they may also need a person or teacher to explain why an answer was wrong.

WIRED separately summarized a Michigan State University study as finding that Babbel facilitated grammar and vocabulary acquisition and improved oral communication skills. That is a finding about Babbel as summarized by WIRED, not evidence that all language apps produce the same results.

A translator addresses an immediate communication problem; it does not teach you the language. WIRED’s August 2023 guide described Pocketalk Plus as a handheld, internet-connected device for two-way speech translation and camera-based translation of text. It reported support for 82 languages in audio and text. That count, along with the connectivity terms below, comes from the 2023 article and needs current verification.

WIRED said the device’s supplied SIM worked for two years, after which reconnecting cost $50; Wi-Fi or phone tethering were alternatives. Treat the SIM term and reconnection price as historical, not a current offer. A camera translation feature may be useful for signs or menus, while two-way speech translation serves spoken exchanges; both depend on a workable connection according to the article’s description.

How the translator options differ

Option Form and workflow Trade-offs reported by WIRED
Pocketalk Plus Handheld device; two-way speech translation and camera-based text translation. Internet-connected; WIRED reported Wi-Fi and phone tethering as alternatives to its supplied SIM. Historical language count and SIM terms are from the 2023 article, not verified current specifications. Translation depends on connectivity.
Timekettle WT2 Edge Translator earbuds paired with a phone app for two-way conversation translation. WIRED reported conversation delay, occasional incorrect translations, frequent connectivity losses, and poorer offline performance. It also noted problems with multiple speakers.

Consider whether you prefer a handheld device or shared earbuds, whether you need camera translation for printed text, and how reliable an internet connection will be where you are traveling. The WIRED article does not establish a comprehensive current head-to-head test, so its descriptions should not be read as a guarantee of present-day performance.
