Samsung Electronics reported 2025 spending to upgrade Samsung Display’s current lines without identifying their technology; LG Display still operated TFT-LCD facilities in June 2026, while its recently announced major facility project targets OLED.
Are Korean display makers investing more in LCD or OLED?
The clearest recent major project disclosed by either company is LG Display’s OLED-focused facility investment. Samsung’s reported spending is described as an upgrade to existing lines, but the disclosure does not say whether those lines make TFT-LCD, OLED or another display technology. These figures therefore do not provide a like-for-like comparison of LCD investment.
| Company and disclosure | Technology identified | Project type and amount | What the disclosure establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Display, FY2025 capex result announced Jan. 29, 2026 | Not stated by Samsung Electronics | Approximately KRW 2.8 trillion in Samsung Display capex; described as investment to upgrade current lines | Spending and line upgrades were reported, but a TFT-LCD allocation or capacity increase was not identified. Samsung Electronics FY 2025 CAPEX Results |
| LG Display, OLED facility project announced in 2026 | OLED | Approximately KRW 3 trillion total investment, comprising KRW 1.5 trillion in fund support and KRW 1.5 trillion from LG’s own resources; Korea’s Financial Services Commission approved KRW 1.3 trillion in low-interest financing | The project is OLED-targeted. The approved financing and LG’s described total investment are distinct figures, not interchangeable measures of the project. Financial Services Commission of Korea, July 30, 2026 |
LG Display’s 2025 Annual Report describes Korean panel makers as shifting their business focus toward OLED products while enhancing TFT-LCD technology. That distinction matters: improving LCD technology does not, on its own, show that a company is adding LCD capacity or increasing LCD capex. LG Display 2025 Annual Report
Is LG Display still making LCD panels?
Yes. LG Display’s second-quarter 2026 report says that, as of June 30, 2026, the company operated TFT-LCD and OLED panel manufacturing plants in Gumi, Paju and China. It also listed TFT-LCD and OLED module plants in Gumi, Paju, China and Vietnam. This establishes continuing operating capability; it does not establish a new LCD facility or a recent increase in LCD investment. LG Display Second Quarter 2026 Report

What is Samsung Display investing in?
Samsung Electronics’ FY2025 capex disclosure reported approximately KRW 2.8 trillion for Samsung Display and characterized it as “investments to upgrade current lines, etc”. The disclosure does not name the display technology, identify a particular site or break out spending for TFT-LCD. It is accurate to describe this as investment in current-line upgrades, but not as confirmed TFT-LCD investment or added LCD capacity.
Historical context also cautions against equating investment involving an LCD line with more TFT-LCD production. In October 2019, Samsung Display announced KRW 13.1 trillion through 2025 for QD display production facilities and R&D, including phased conversion of an existing eighth-generation LCD line at Asan. That was a plan for QD technology and a historical announcement—not evidence of a new 2026 TFT-LCD investment. Samsung Display, October 10, 2019

Does upgrading an existing display line mean adding TFT-LCD capacity?
No. An upgrade can improve or adapt an existing production line without increasing its capacity, and a line originally used for LCD can be converted to another technology. To substantiate a claim that a manufacturer is boosting TFT-LCD investment, a dated disclosure would need to identify the LCD technology and the spending or capacity involved. The cited Samsung disclosure does not provide that detail, while LG’s recent major facility project is explicitly OLED-focused.
