Use position: sticky with a non-auto vertical inset, such as top: 1rem, and leave the sidebar’s height unset so its content determines its natural size. Sticky positioning keeps the element in normal flow, but its containing block limits how far it can travel. If it does not stick where expected, check the inset, ancestor overflow, container height, and Grid or Flexbox alignment.
Build the basic layout
This pattern places a content-sized sidebar beside a main column. The sidebar remains in document flow, and the main content can be longer without requiring a fixed sidebar height.
<div class="layout">
<aside class="sidebar">
<nav aria-label="On this page">
<!-- Content determines the sidebar's natural height. -->
</nav>
</aside>
<main>
<!-- Longer article content. -->
</main>
</div>
.layout {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: minmax(12rem, 18rem) minmax(0, 1fr);
gap: 2rem;
align-items: start;
}
.sidebar {
position: sticky;
top: 1rem;
}
The column definition gives the sidebar a width between 12rem and 18rem while allowing the main column to shrink as needed. align-items: start prevents grid children from stretching to fill the row’s cross-axis space, which can leave a sticky item with little or no room to move. This is a practical starting point, not a universal recipe: the correct alignment and sizing depend on the actual DOM and constraints.
Why the sidebar can size itself
position: sticky does not set a fixed height. Without a height constraint, the sidebar’s normal sizing follows its content. It remains part of normal flow and is offset once it reaches the threshold set by its inset; unlike a fixed-position element, it does not leave its original place in the layout. MDN’s position reference explains that at least one inset on the axis where the element should stick must have a non-auto value. For vertical sticking, that commonly means top or inset-block-start.

The containing block sets the travel boundary: the sidebar cannot remain stuck beyond that block’s opposite edge. A short parent may therefore make the sidebar stop sticking sooner than expected. Sticky positioning also creates a stacking context, so a sidebar that overlaps neighboring content may need deliberate stacking and background treatment.
Diagnose a sidebar that will not stick
Check the layout in this order; each item can make the sticky reference or available travel differ from what the page appears to show.
- Verify the rule targets the intended element. Inspect the rendered sidebar and confirm the expected
position: stickydeclaration applies to that element rather than only to a nested child or a different wrapper. - Set a real inset on the vertical axis. Use a non-
autovalue such astop: 1rem. Without a non-auto inset on the sticky axis, sticky behaves like relative positioning on that axis. - Inspect ancestor overflow. Walk up the DOM tree and check for
overflow: hidden,scroll,auto, oroverlay. The nearest ancestor that creates a scrolling mechanism becomes the sticky reference, even if the page itself is the visibly scrolling area. See MDN’s position reference for the scrolling-container behavior. - Check the containing block’s height. The sidebar needs a sufficiently tall containing block to have a travel range. If the block ends near the sidebar, sticking ends there too. MDN’s containing-block reference describes this boundary.
- Inspect Grid or Flexbox sizing and alignment. Determine which element is sticky and whether it is stretched or fills the available cross-axis space. Try an appropriate start alignment, such as
align-items: starton the relevant container, if stretching leaves no room for movement. The fix depends on the layout structure; MDN discusses these interactions in its position reference. - Compare the sidebar height with the available scrolling area. If the sidebar is taller than the area in which it would need to fit, it cannot stay positioned as intended. Reduce or reorganize its contents, change the layout, or deliberately provide an internal scrolling strategy rather than expecting the sticky box to fit.
- Test smaller screens and different content lengths. A sidebar that works on a desktop may crowd a narrow viewport, especially when its contents grow. Use ordinary flow or another responsive arrangement when there is not enough room for the sidebar and reading area to coexist comfortably.
When to use sticky rather than ordinary flow
Choose based on how the sidebar behaves in the real layout, not simply whether CSS can make it stick.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Use sticky when persistent navigation or controls help readers while they move through a long main column, the sidebar fits comfortably in the available viewport, and its containing block provides enough travel.
- Prefer ordinary flow when the sidebar is only useful near its original position, the viewport is constrained, or keeping it visible would crowd the main content.
- Reconsider the scroll structure when an ancestor creates a nested scrolling area. The nearest scrolling-mechanism ancestor, not necessarily the page, determines the sticky reference.
These are layout decisions rather than performance claims. Check both short and long sidebar content and the narrowest supported layout before relying on sticky behavior.
