The reported result raised questions about safeguards, but it does not show that Sora used her videos to train or that the output was authentic footage. Sora is now discontinued; OpenAI says the product has been unavailable since April 26, 2026.
What happened in the reported Sora test?
Futurism, in a story by Noor Al-Sibai syndicated by Yahoo Tech, relayed a TechCrunch test of Sora. TechCrunch reportedly entered the prompt pokimane twitch playthrough watch game live stream subscribe
. The resulting video showed a woman at a screen wearing illuminated over-ear headphones, with exaggerated features and a large grin. Futurism described the likeness as strong but uncanny and distorted. This was a reported approximation, not a genuine recording of Pokimane. Futurism’s report
The article also said TechCrunch obtained outputs resembling another gaming streamer, Raúl Álvarez “Auronplay” Genesand. Futurism said it could not reproduce the Pokimane result because OpenAI had suspended new Sora signups after a traffic surge. That was the outlet’s observation at the time, not a statement about Sora’s current availability.
Why did Sora know who Pokimane was?
The report supports a limited explanation: in that test, a prompt naming Pokimane alongside livestream cues reportedly led the early public Sora release to produce a recognizable approximation. The output shows that the model could respond to that combination of name and context; it does not reveal how the model acquired the association.

Did Sora train on Pokimane’s videos?
The incident does not establish that Pokimane’s YouTube videos, livestreams, or any other specific uploads were in Sora’s training data. Futurism said OpenAI had not disclosed whether YouTube content was used. In December 2024, the Associated Press likewise reported that OpenAI had not disclosed the imagery and video sources used to train Sora. A resemblance in generated output cannot identify a particular training example or prove that a specific person’s content was included. AP’s December 2024 report
Does it prove OpenAI intentionally targeted her?
No. The reported test does not show that OpenAI deliberately selected Pokimane, establish consent or lack of consent for any particular training item, or make the generated video authentic footage. Visible resemblance is the reported observation; training provenance and intent are separate questions that this result cannot answer.

What safeguards applied, and when?
Sora’s safeguards and human-video rules should be understood in their date and product context. The 2024 report, later Sora 2 policy material, and the product’s eventual discontinuation describe different stages, not one timeless rule.
| Date and product context | What was reported or stated |
|---|---|
| December 10, 2024: initial public release | AP reported that only a small group of invited testers could generate videos of humans while OpenAI monitored for misuse. Sora was available to users of a premium ChatGPT product, but human-video capability was restricted. AP, December 10, 2024 |
| Sora System Card | OpenAI described moderation intended to flag likeness-based prompts that could produce harmful deepfakes and stated that its policies prohibit using another person’s likeness without permission. The system card also records red-team findings that adversarial prompts and feature combinations could degrade safeguards during testing. These are statements about policy, design intent, and test findings—not proof that every output was successfully blocked. OpenAI’s Sora System Card |
| September 30, 2025: Sora 2 launch | OpenAI’s deployment safety material described initial safeguards that did not support text-to-video generation of public figures and blocked real-person generations except through consented likeness-control cameos. These later Sora 2 rules do not describe the rules governing the 2024 test. OpenAI’s Sora 2 launch material |
| March–April 2026: shutdown | AP reported on March 24, 2026, that OpenAI was shutting down the Sora app. OpenAI’s current safety page says the Sora product has been unavailable since April 26, 2026. AP’s shutdown report · OpenAI’s current Sora safety page |
OpenAI’s current safety page also describes visible and invisible provenance signals, C2PA metadata, consent controls for likeness, reporting tools, and layered content safeguards. Those later product measures do not settle what material was used to train the earlier model or show that the reported 2024 output would have been prevented.

Can Sora make videos of real people now?
No current Sora product is available: OpenAI’s safety page states, “As of April 26, 2026, the Sora product is no longer available.” The reported Pokimane-like result belongs to an early public release in 2024. Sora 2’s later launch policy described different restrictions, including limits on public figures and consented likeness-control cameos for real-person generations; those rules should not be applied retroactively to the earlier test.
