The Ask button opens Ask Photos, an experimental Gemini-powered feature that can search your photo library using natural-language requests, answer questions about photos and albums, and make edits you describe. It is more than a new label for ordinary search—but access varies by region, and Google warns that results can be inaccurate.
What Ask Photos can do
Google describes Ask Photos as a way to search your library, ask questions about photos and albums, and request edits. Instead of relying only on a short keyword, you can describe a memory or ask about details shown in your pictures.
- Find photos with natural-language searches: Describe a trip, occasion, or type of image. Google’s examples include “Photos that’d make great phone backgrounds.”
- Ask about your library: You can ask questions that connect images to a memory or details visible in them. Google offers “What did I eat on my trip to Barcelona?” as an example prompt.
- Request an edit: Write or say what change you want. This editing capability is part of Ask Photos, not the separate Google Photos connection in Gemini Apps.
These prompts are examples from Google’s help pages, not independently verified results. Google labels Ask Photos experimental and says it may return unexpected, inaccurate, or inappropriate answers.
How Ask Photos search works
Google says Ask Photos starts by showing a page of relevant results. A simple query such as “beach” or “dog” may be answered by that results page. For a more complex request, Gemini can continue working in the background to narrow the results and highlight relevant items. You can switch between Ask Photos results and classic search.

To ask about a specific photo on Android, Google instructs users to open the photo, tap Ask Image, then type a prompt or use voice input. Google says photo-specific use requires backed-up images.
Ask Photos, classic search, and Gemini Apps compared
| Experience | Search and questions | Photo editing | Availability and controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ask Photos inside Google Photos | Natural-language searches and questions about photos and albums. | Can make edits requested in writing or by voice. | Experimental; availability and functionality vary by region. Google Photos controls apply. |
| Classic Google Photos search | Searches the library without the Ask Photos conversational experience. | Not established as part of classic search. | Google says classic search remains available for people without Ask Photos access; users can also switch to it from Ask Photos. |
| Google Photos connected to Gemini Apps | Can find photos, videos, and albums and answer questions about details in media. | Cannot use Google Photos editing features or create or edit albums. | Separate Gemini Apps workflow with its own eligibility requirements and applicable policies. |
Access and setup depend on location and account eligibility
Google says Ask Photos is rolling out with availability and functionality that vary by region. Its documentation does not provide a complete country list, so the Ask tab may not appear for every user. If you do not have access, Google says classic Photos search remains available.

When you opt in to Ask Photos, Google Photos renames the Search tab to Ask. Google’s separate Gemini Apps integration has different eligibility requirements, including a personal Google Account, Keep Activity enabled, being at least 18, and being in a supported location. Connecting Photos to Gemini Apps is not the same as using Ask Photos inside Google Photos.
What to know about privacy
Google’s privacy notice for Gemini features in Photos says they may use photos and videos in your library, face-group labels and names, and information from your Google Account. It also describes inferences from library content, including estimates about face groups and insights related to a user’s life.

Google says personal Google Photos data is not used for ads and is not used to train generative AI models outside Google Photos. The notice distinguishes response review from query review: human reviewers do not review Ask Photos responses unless you give feedback or in rare cases involving abuse or harm. Queries may be reviewed to improve Photos after steps intended to protect privacy; Google says they are disconnected from Google Accounts and sensitive content is removed through specialized processes. You can turn off query review in settings.
If you submit feedback, Google says it may include the conversation transcript, an optional screenshot, and lists of photos, albums, and face groups studied for the response. These statements concern Gemini features inside Google Photos; Google cautions that different policies and controls may apply when you share a photo with or connect it to another Google or third-party service.

When to double-check an answer
Ask Photos can help surface images and make sense of a library, but its output should not be treated as reliable evidence. Google warns that answers may be unexpected or inaccurate. Be especially cautious with personal details inferred from photographs, and confirm important information against the original image or another reliable source.
Google documents controls for turning Ask Photos and Gemini features off. Because availability, behavior, and privacy controls can vary, consult Google’s current Help and privacy information for the options shown in your account.
