On July 20, 2025, then-Mayor Eric Adams announced a City-run “NYC Public Safety” account on Citizen to distribute public-safety information and alerts. The administration said the initiative would cost the City nothing, but available sources do not confirm whether the NYC-specific account is still operating as of October 8, 2026.
What Adams announced
The Adams administration described NYC Public Safety as a City account on Citizen that would compile information from public-safety agencies and share it with app users. The July 20, 2025 announcement named NYPD, FDNY, and NYC Emergency Management as participating agencies. The City also said NYPD and NYC Emergency Management already had Citizen accounts at that time. NYC Mayor’s Office announcement
Adams said the account could reach more than 3 million Citizen subscribers across the five boroughs. That was the administration’s launch-time estimate, not an independently verified figure or a current user count. NYC Mayor’s Office, July 20, 2025
What alerts and updates were planned
The City said it would use the account for agency announcements, alerts about major incidents and weather emergencies, safety tips about crime patterns and scams, and updates on high-profile incidents. Notifications could be targeted by neighborhood, ZIP code, or borough, according to the announcement. NYC Mayor’s Office announcement

The announcement framed Citizen as an additional channel for public-safety information, not as a replacement for the City’s other communication services. It also referred to NotifyNYC, the City’s existing emergency notification service, but did not provide a full feature-by-feature comparison of the two channels.
How agency access to videos was described
The City said designated staff at NYPD, FDNY, and NYC Emergency Management would receive access to a secure dashboard to view and download user-submitted videos from incident scenes. The stated potential uses included supporting investigations and reviewing incidents afterward. NYC Mayor’s Office announcement

That description concerns the arrangement announced in 2025. Citizen’s current general partnership page says verified public-safety partners can view publicly shared Citizen videos through responder platforms. Citizen also says users are notified if a partner requests more information and can opt out of direct sharing with partners in app settings. Those general statements do not confirm the precise current configuration of the NYC agencies’ dashboard or whether the account’s original arrangement remains in place. Citizen partnerships
Cost and the launch-time audience claim
The Adams administration described the initiative as being offered at no cost to the City. That statement applies to the City’s initiative as announced; it does not establish Citizen’s broader business model or whether an individual user may encounter charges for other services. The administration also said the account could reach more than 3 million subscribers across the five boroughs. This was a claim about Citizen’s audience at launch in July 2025, not a measurement of the account’s reach or a current New York City subscriber total. NYC Mayor’s Office, July 20, 2025
Who is New York City’s mayor now?
The Citizen announcement came from the Eric Adams administration. New York City’s current Mayor’s Office page identifies Zohran Kwame Mamdani as the 112th mayor and says he was sworn in on January 1, 2026. The 2025 partnership should therefore be described as an Adams-administration initiative, not as a new announcement by Mayor Mamdani. NYC Mayor’s Office

Is NYC Public Safety still active on Citizen?
The available City announcement and current Mayor’s Office and Citizen pages do not establish whether the NYC-specific Citizen account remains active or whether its functions have changed as of October 8, 2026. The 2025 announcement documents what the Adams administration planned; it is not confirmation of the account’s present status.
