It is a playful interpretation, not a guaranteed exact copy: maker Kamil Stanuch described the project as a proof of concept and said the result may not correspond entirely to the original page.
What GeoCities.live does
GeoCities.live is presented as a tool for transforming a webpage into a 1990s-style page, with what its Product Hunt listing calls a “pinch of AI.” Its maker said the idea came from wanting a break from repetitive modern website designs, and suggested that stripping away contemporary design could make a page’s content easier to focus on. Those are the project’s stated aims, not independent findings about how well it works.

Stanuch called it “a proof of concept coded in one evening” and said it “analyses the content and creates something new on its own, that doesn’t correspond to the original entirely.” In practical terms, treat the output as a generated remix: it may capture some material or ideas from the page without preserving its full layout, wording, links, or behavior.
What “GeoCities” means here
GeoCities.live is not the original GeoCities hosting service. GeoCities began in 1994, when users chose a themed “city” or neighborhood for their personal pages. The US service closed on October 26, 2009. The new tool borrows the visual memory of that era; it does not restore or recreate the original service.

What is—and isn’t—verified
The GeoCities.live Product Hunt listing marked the service free, but that listing does not establish current pricing or a continuing free tier. It also does not provide authoritative current privacy terms or guarantee that the service remains available.
- Accuracy: The maker explicitly says generated pages may differ from their source. No independent accuracy measure is established.
- Compatibility: The phrase “any webpage” describes the concept, not a verified guarantee that every URL can be transformed.
- Privacy: The available listing does not explain how submitted URLs or page content are handled. Avoid sending sensitive or private pages unless current official terms answer that question.
- Safety: The available information does not establish GeoCities.live’s security controls or whether generated content is safe to open.
How this kind of transformation might work
A separate open-source Chrome extension, Retro Web, documents one possible approach: extract readable page elements such as titles, headings, paragraphs, image URLs, and links; send that material to a language model to create a retro page; then display the generated HTML in a sandboxed iframe. Its README says scripts are not allowed to run in that sandbox. This is an example of another project’s design, not evidence that GeoCities.live uses the same model, process, or safeguards.

| Approach | Best for | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| GeoCities.live | Quickly seeing an existing webpage reimagined in a 1990s style | A generated interpretation; exact fidelity, current availability, privacy terms, and ongoing free access are not established by the Product Hunt listing. |
| Retro Web extension | Exploring a separate browser-extension example of retro page rendering | Its repository describes extracting page content and rendering generated HTML in a sandbox. This does not establish GeoCities.live’s implementation. |
| Personal-site hosting | Building a persistent site of your own in a retro style | A different goal from transforming a page for viewing. Neocities describes itself as a modern service connected to reviving free website hosting associated with GeoCities; check its current offering directly. |
If you want a quick novelty transformation, GeoCities.live is the option aimed at that experience. If you want to publish a site you control, use a hosting service and create the retro design as a persistent website instead.
