CISA added CVE-2024-12686, BeyondTrust advisory BT24-11, to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog in January 2025. It affects BeyondTrust Remote Support (RS) and Privileged Remote Access (PRA), but exploitation requires an attacker to already have administrative privileges. BeyondTrust said it patched its cloud customers; administrators of self-hosted systems need to apply the product-appropriate update.

What CVE-2024-12686 is

BeyondTrust’s December 18, 2024 advisory describes CVE-2024-12686 as a medium-severity command-injection vulnerability with a CVSS v3 score of 6.6. It affects Remote Support and Privileged Remote Access. The vendor’s affected-version table lists versions 24.3.1 and earlier, and says all versions contain the vulnerability; follow the advisory’s product-specific instructions to determine the applicable update.

An attacker must already have administrative privileges. With that access, the attacker could upload a malicious file and execute operating-system commands in the context of the site user. This is not an unauthenticated initial-access vulnerability: the privilege requirement is central to understanding the risk.

What the KEV addition means

Contemporaneous reporting said CISA added CVE-2024-12686 to KEV on January 13, 2025. The catalog lists vulnerabilities that agencies must address under federal remediation requirements; reports said the deadline for federal agencies to remediate this entry was February 3, 2025. Those dates describe the reported 2025 catalog action and deadline, not a statement of the entry’s live status today. Organizations outside the federal mandate should still assess exposure and patch according to their risk and obligations.

How to patch Remote Support or Privileged Remote Access

Cloud deployments

BeyondTrust said it had applied a patch to all Remote Support and Privileged Remote Access cloud customers as of December 16, 2024. Cloud administrators should verify their instance and current status with BeyondTrust rather than assume that historical patching guidance establishes the present state of a particular tenant.

Self-hosted deployments

  1. Identify whether the installation is Remote Support or Privileged Remote Access and record its version.
  2. Open the BeyondTrust appliance interface at /appliance and follow advisory BT24-11 for the applicable product and version.
  3. Apply the matching on-premises patch, identified in the advisory as a BT24-11-ONPREM update. The identifier varies by product version, so do not select a patch based on the advisory number alone.
  4. If the installation is older than release 22.1, upgrade it before applying the fix, as BeyondTrust directs.
  5. Confirm the resulting version and patch state against BeyondTrust’s current instructions and your change-management records.

How CVE-2024-12686 differs from the first BeyondTrust flaw

CVE-2024-12686 was the second BeyondTrust vulnerability in this disclosure sequence, not a second name for the earlier flaw. The earlier CVE-2024-12356, tracked in advisory BT24-10, was rated critical; CVE-2024-12686 (BT24-11) was rated medium and requires existing administrative privileges.

Vulnerability Advisory Reported severity Key distinction
CVE-2024-12356 BT24-10 Critical Earlier flaw in the disclosure sequence; do not conflate it with CVE-2024-12686.
CVE-2024-12686 BT24-11 Medium; CVSS v3 6.6 per BeyondTrust Command injection requiring existing administrative privileges.

Do not confuse the CVE with the December SaaS incident

BeyondTrust’s broader December 2024 Remote Support SaaS incident is related to the company and product, but the available accounts do not establish that CVE-2024-12686 caused or enabled the incident or the Treasury compromise discussed in contemporaneous coverage. The vendor said a compromised infrastructure API key was used to access certain SaaS instances by resetting local application passwords. It reported that 17 Remote Support SaaS customers were involved, that no products outside Remote Support SaaS and no FedRAMP instances were affected, and that its forensic investigation concluded January 17, 2025. These incident details are BeyondTrust’s account, not proof of a link to BT24-11.
